The Importance Of Teenage Life

Decent Essays
Teenage life tends to revolve around school and relationships. There are the kids who can balance their grades and social life; there are the kids who only care about their relationships; there are the kids who only care about their grades. Quite frankly, I’m in the last category. Don’t get me wrong, I care for my friends! But if I have to defend my love life, then I wouldn’t. That’s because I don’t have one, never had one, and (honestly) isn't planning for one. Oh, the horror! I decided to mention this fact in school and believed everyone understood.
But something occurred to that changed my whole worldview. One day, I was calling a guy about a school project and was suddenly led to a conversation about our personal lives. At the time, I

The kitchen sink sat perfectly underneath a window, which provides so much natural light that the kitchen lights were rendered useless. The sink was filled to the brim with bowls, plates, chopsticks, and other kitchen utensils. Although the sink had dirty dishes, there was a strong lemon aroma coming from it because of the dish soap. The water pouring out of the faucet was so hot that it steamed; I especially remember a bit of hot water splashing on my face, stinging it in the process. Other than the clickity and clackity sounds of the dishes and gushing sounds of the steaming faucet, everything was …show more content…
Although it is distasteful, I thought that to improve my behavior towards others regarding the topic I would have to talk about it. Sometimes while doing chores, I would talk about how sex was normal for people who date, but my parents said: “Sex only comes after marriage.” Whenever I bring up a topic that relates to “sex,” they would continue using the same traditional phrase: “Sex only comes after marriage.” One time, my family was huddled together in the living room folding the laundry. We were all sitting on the wooden floor, surrounding a mountain of laundry. The room had the scent of lavenders because of the clothes. And the only sound I heard was the Viet Drama being played on the television. While folding the clothes I said: “I saw a movie about a girl getting pregnant in high-school and continued to go to a college even with a baby.” I was astounded at her perseverance. But my parents sighed and my father said: “Jennifer, that’s ruinous to have a baby in high-school. Yes, it’s possible to get a degree but expensive.” Thus, a drawn-out lecture of how expensive school is. Because of that dialogue, I became wary of how bad a relationship can go and may even ruin my future. Maybe at that point, I thought: “Maybe a romance does not need sex.” But after seeing social media stories talking about their relationships failed because the other cheated for not enough sex; this

Chapter 3 discusses the “Myth of Adolescence” reminding us that the term “teenager”. The term “adolescence” literally means “to grow up.” Our current culture is unfortunately over defined by the existence of teenagers and adolescence. As Kathleen Boggle, the author of Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus states the actual concept behind the term “Hooking up”. She refers through her book how “romantic relationships among college students are becoming increasingly noncommittal, and sexual activity outside the context of a committed relationship has become far more common place on college campuses”. This statement is referred to young adults since they are vulnerable to being more sexually active, as these college students are slowly starting to move out of the old fashion methods of love, and hooking up is replacing the traditional dating. Boggle also stated that casually hooking up or dating leads to psychological problems coming from an individual. Many of these casual dates and sexual activities done by both partners can lead to sexual risks.…

My topic is a late school start and I support teens starting school at a later time I know this for the reason that I am also a teen and I know what it feels like to wake up with less energy because I didn't get the amount of sleep I needed. A "Ted Talk by Wendy Troxel a Sleep Researcher" states that not getting enough sleep could cause issues throughout the day. There will be disadvantages to starting school later, for example, if your in a sport or job it might be harder to control the time for practice or the time of your shift, but if you don't get a good sleep you won't even have the energy for the whole day. Those are my reasons on why I support the idea that teens should start school later. Next, teens should be starting school later for the reason that if a teen does not sleep the amount needed there could be problems in their life.…

My perspective on the themes that emerged from our in-class discussions is that all these concepts/factors correlate with one another somehow. They relate to the social issues that we face today. I strongly feel that the way we behave and what we experience determines how we feel towards certain issues like racial profiling or underpaid women. Also, where we fit in society, like if we’re non-disable people or heterosexuals determines our perceptions on things too. For instance, what came up in one of our readings in class was the concept of privilege.…

1.) I believe that Steinem‘s main message in her article If Men Could Menstruate is to show us that how we understand what is normal and acceptable about our bodies is very much culturally dictated. Steinem proposes that “the characteristics of the powerful, whatever they may be, are thought to be better than the characteristics of the powerless”(pg.209). Menstruating would no longer be connected to impurity or weakness if it were a male trait. It is only connected to these things because it is associated to the less powerful sex.…

Our society’s perception of sex and sexuality is influenced by various factors, such as the media, culture, and religion. The media influences our perception of sex by oversexualizing women and over masculinizing men in advertisements, music videos, television, and film. Female models and actresses may dress or act in a provocative manner to gain attention by the media and particularly from men. Women may be influenced to imitate these behaviors, or even exaggerate their sexuality, to appear desirable to men. Women may also feel unconfident when comparing their bodies to those seen in the media, creating an unhealthy perception of their sexuality.…
