Technology. It truly is a wonderful thing but is it always helpful. Thats is your personal opinion but through the work “What is it about the 20- somethings” by Robin Henig and “The Limits of Friendship” by Maria Konnikova people can see that technology does three major things: hurts face to face interaction, Creates a lack in human interaction, and hinders the social development of kids. Technology is interesting that way, as it seems to help us but can actually stop our own development. That’s why technology is truly a hinderance of social development in the modern age. First;y, face to face interactions are vital in today’s society. People lack the ability to hold conversations and it is only getting worse. Robin Henig states ““In young adulthood, according to his model, the primary psychological challenge is “intimacy vs. isolation.”” (Henig 202). She is saying that kids like using technology to communicate compared to just going up and meeting the person. When she says intimacy vs. isolation she is saying that kids usually debate isolating themselves and interacting over the social media rather than being intimate and actually …show more content…
In this difficult world being able to communicate what you want to get across is such an advantage in life. Kids need to learn that it is better to go face to face and actually get a real interaction with someone and how emails and text messages can actually hurt them in the future. Konnikova says Interacting with people over the internet or gaming devices leads to a decrease in connections, “Without investing the face-to face time, we lack deeper connections to them, and the time we invest in superficial relationships come at the expense of more profound ones”(238). These deeper connections that she talk about are the ones that help build relationships and that can help you move on later in life. They just use their time on other things like video games and social media

The Elements Paying Tribute to Friendship is a sculpture created by Louis-Simon Boizot in the year 1783. The sculpture is made out of “marble presenting the depth of carving by producing space and sense of physical presence” (Boizot). There are four figurines that symbolize the “elements of clouds, flames, waves, and earth” (Boizot). The four elements are paying tribute to lady named Friendship who is “standing on a platform with her arm wrapped around an elm tree stump wearing a wreath of myrtle” (Boizot). Cybele is the representation of “earth, are leaning over two lions that are both kneeling in front of Friendship” (Boizot).…

A professor from Stanford University, Clifford Nass, stated, "Kids have to learn about emotion, and the way they do that, really, is by paying attention to other people. They have to really look them in the eye. " Most kids these days don't even communicate face-to-face. Texting has become the main form of communication, so when kids get home, how can they look at each other in the eye if they just text? Another study has shown that children's social skills are affected negatively when they multitask with technology.…

Technology is a substantial benefit in life. The internet is used tons of times during the day, but eventually, technology has a detrimental outcome. Technology helps advance a society, but the lack of relationships and human communication, oppression by a large governmental or corporate institution, and use of futuristic technology caused by advancements is dangerous. Humans are using less social skills due to constant messaging with their fingertips. Governments and institutions are beginning to take total power because of the lack of knowledge in the community.…

The use of technology causes us to meet face-to-face with much less frequency, resulting in a lack of much needed social skills. We lose the ability to hold conversations and end up getting distracted by our phones. In the article, "Social Media as Community", Keith Hampton argues, "However, this has not slowed arguments that social media is increasingly a part of these prosperous societies and that this new tool is responsible for a growing trend of social isolation and loss of intimacy." This means that social media sometimes prevents us to socialize in real life. More teenagers seem to choose to use their technology rather than socializing in real life.…

Multitasking has been proven to be ineffective in many cases. Russell Poldrack went so far as to say it “changes the way people learn” making a person’s new knowledge “less flexible and more specialized” (qtd. in Rosen 376) . The term effective, however, is used very loosely, largely depending on which exact process you wish to be effective.…

The article I have chosen to write about is, Brent Staples, “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace.” Because kids spend most of their time on the web, Staples argues that “online communities isolate adolescents and hinder their social development” (Staples 241). Although I find this to be true, I also find it to be wrong. Even with the internet's revolutionary functions that help the world, the internet is hurting adolescents who will one day run the world. Brent Staples starts his essay by talking about how he had to meet his girlfriend’s father back when he was in the 10th grade.…

Concerns have been raised in the 21st century about the young adult’s slowing transition into adulthood. Robin Henig discusses these concerns in her article “What is it About 20-Somethings?” by writing on the topic of emerging adulthood, a period before adulthood that sociologists believe may be a new distinct life stage. Henig addresses the idea that young people in America have put off the traditional milestones such as completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying and having a child. More recently, technology and the use of social media have become popular and prevalent among young adults and children, a point Maria Konnikova brings up in her article “The Limits of Friendship.”…

Children aren’t getting the practice of having two-way conversation, for example, or learning how to negotiate differences. Too much technology can impact the development of other important social skills, such as: expression of emotions, how to deal with conflict and communication. Children need to learn how to play and get along with others and to have an imagination without the help of technology. Face-to-face communication is so important especially when they get a job, they need to know how to communicate with co-workers. “Surveys indicate that about 82% of children are online…

There have been several people that ask themselves whether technology is the cause of having society be less sociable around people or if it helps them be in touch with anyone to communicate around the world. Technology has taken over a big part of the world that has changed people's lives in many different ways. Society is becoming less interactive with the people surrounding them because of social media, texting, video calling, email, online shopping, and playing games. Those who were born before the electronics and the internet are not accustomed to seeing people or kids being so focused on their handheld devices.
