These days our phones are so much more than communication devices. They are business tools with tremendous computing power. I would be less effective without my smart phone. In fact, I can 't imagine fielding a project team without the capability the smart phones provides.

I want them available, but I also try to warn them when after hours communication may be necessary so that they can plan accordingly. Unfortunately, the nature of our businesses and the location of our customers sometimes leaves us with little choice concerning the times we are required to be available. I think if I were supervising line workers at a factory the situation might be different. As it is, I try to protect my employees down time and encourage them to take full advantage of all of their available time off. Focus on work when at work and try not to when you are off. I am very strict about not working at all during vacations. We all need time to recharge and focus on the things in life that are truly important. Making a living and supporting a family is just part of life. Work should not be what defines us. I went to my uncles funeral ten years ago and all anyone could say about him was what a hard worker he was. I thought it was good that he worked hard and loved his occupation, but even his family and friends could only speak to his work ethic. I do not want my legacy to be how hard I worked. In general, keep calm and work the problem are words to live by.The website theproductivitypro.com states, "When an unexpected event does occur, face the situation calmly. Most people either freeze in place or let everything grind to a halt, or they overreact in some way, making things worse. Neither paralysis nor freaking out can help you. Instead, carefully and deliberately assess the situation, and then do whatever you must to fix it." As a supervisor I have had to respond to everything from computer crashes to snake bites. Yes, I said snake bites. I have had employees involved in traffic accidents, shot at and even robed at gun point. In all these situations, when I remained calm and expressed appropriate concern we where able to deal with the situation in an effective manner. When I became upset or angry, others around me responded in a similar manner and we became ineffective. I used to help conduct evacuation drills at high rise buildings. The thing we emphasized most was keep calm. Even when the building is burning down around you, keep calm and make forward progress. Assess, decide and move forward. Also, keep your integrity intact.
