Kids these days are growing up with technology which means they will be very computer savvy and will be able to use it easier than someone who is already older and is learning how to use it. Which means that students may feel as though they have the upper hand, especially if one day their teacher is having technical issues and one of the students helps fix it. Students are using computers for a lot of things now and if the teacher is having them do an assignment on the computer and there is a power outage then the teacher will need to have a backup plan so that the students are not left doing nothing. Schools have also been keeping all their records on files on the school’s computers which we are already having problems with students hacking into the schools systems to change their grades or their friends grades. And students are also now able to get around the blocks that schools put on inappropriate websites. There will always be students smart enough to figure out a way of going around blocks on the computers and how to get into the systems to change things. Those are just some of the issues that could happen in the schools, there may also be home problems as well. Now students are having to do assignments that include technology. They are using smart boards that they can use together as a classroom in elementary school, they are beginning to use tablets and ebooks with the older students. Students use it to do research for projects, papers. Sometimes even for math, with youtube students can look up math problems and come up with a video that will explain it to them.
How will I teach for the 21st Century learner? When I first thought about being an elementary school teacher I wasn’t even aware that there were smart boards. So I hadn’t put much thought about how much technology is actually being used even from the kindergarten level. But after realizing how much it is being used I do plan on using whatever tools I have at my disposal to better teach my students. I do realize that all students are different and some may be better at using computers than others but I hope to be able to find a balance where I can also help those understand and use technology a little better.
