What Role Does Technology Play In Society

Superior Essays
Technology has and still continues to play a big role in society. People think that they technically aren’t using “technology”, when in reality they are. Technology isn’t just phones, computers, television, etc., but it is also things that are used in our everyday lives, such as a calculator. Technology has advanced in the past few years. Many of the items that I use today, I wouldn’t of ever imagined that I would be using. Back when I was in first grade, CD players were very popular. Having a CD player back then, was like having the newest iPhone. You were automatically “cool” if you had one. It's crazy to think now that CD players seem like something from ancient history because everyone downloads their music onto their phones. A CD player to me was such new technology that I didn’t even know how to properly work it. All I knew at that time was that by some “magic” it would play music.
I strongly believe that in today’s world, televisions aren’t as popular among people, especially teenagers. This is all thanks to online TV streaming websites, such as Netflix. I am guilty of not using a television as much as I should because Netflix offers you many popular TV shows and movies. Why would you want to sit through commercials when you can just open up your laptop, tablet, or cell phone and

The first time I ever used a calculator in general was when I was in ninth grade. I always knew what calculator was, but I was always told that I wasn’t allowed to use a calculator in math. Over the past three years, I find that the kind of calculator I use has changed drastically. As a freshman, I was using the most basic scientific calculator there was in the business. Now as a junior, I am using such an advanced calculator. It is crazy to know that I went from only being able to do very few things to being able to graph equations on my calculator. To me, it is crazy to see how different calculators

As technology becomes a more influential part of human society, questions are raised considering its impact on society. Clive Thompson’s article, Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better, addresses this issue by stating that technology has a positive effect on society. Jenna Wortham’s article, I Had a Nice Time with You Tonight. On the App., presents a similar argument, but takes a different approach, by making her argument more grounded in everyday life. Thompson’s analysis of how technology positively affects humanity can help shed light on Wortham’s observations about present day technology’s positive effects on communication.…

Math has always come fairly easily to me, starting when I took Algebra 1 as a seventh grader. I’ve excelled many years, even going into my school’s math and science program where the students are given honors math and science classes from ninth grade through twelfth grade. I’ve always been a step ahead in math so that is how I was able to enroll in calculus last year. Everyone else in my class was going to take BC Calculus so I thought I should too, I could handle it if they could.…

Before there were things like Youtube or iTunes that instantly gave you music, there was not so fast technology before hand. The technology that was used before were things like record players and cassette tapes. With today's technology, all you have to do is go on your IPhone or IPad, look up any song from any genre and listen to it. When it came to things like record players, you had to use a big black plastic disc that you put on a spinning deck that played music by using a thin needle that was dragged across the disc as it was spinning.…

The invention of the television had a lot to answer for as it not only kept people entertained at home but also appeared in bars and diners where the jukebox had once taken pride of place. Despite difficult times, the jukebox held on, clinging to the hearts of those that appreciated it, and eventually reinstated it's popularity with the birth of rock and roll in the 50's and 60's. Youths flocked to bars for dancing and socialising, whilst their parents sat at home watching that oh so popular television. Many jukeboxes throughout the 1940's played their music not through the machine, but through speakers that were either wall mounted or placed on counter tops.…

Human Being are Becoming Slaves of Modern Technology Have you seen how people today function? If you have you would see that we do not function well, especially without technology. Technology has been taking over enough to where we can not be but one second away from it. We have become too reliant on it, if it were to be taken from us we would not last long. Even though people think technology is helping us in many areas, if you take a closer look you would see that it really is not.…

At some point I felt that math homework was too troublesome so I decided to write a program to do it for me, and I did just that. Most complex numbers can be represented in exact form by “[x*root(r)/y]+s” and since computers are able to perform several hundred processes a second it was simple for me to set up a guess-and-test program that would match increments in a list of values set at variable x in order to determine if the output value was equivalent to the input value. This made is possible for me to simplify every expression in a mere matter of seconds without needing to write out several lines of algebra. Besides cheating my math homework I used programming to solve other issues as well.…
