Deep and critical reading in today’s modern day culture has become a struggle due to the constant presence of technology. Reading in today’s culture has never been more widespread. However, the way we go about reading and thinking has had a negative effect on human society. This is due to the infection of technology. The consequences of irresponsible technology use include lack of focusing ability, lack of critical thinking skills, lack of critical reading skills, and much more. These negatives then affect our everyday life and have currently had a lasting effect on the millennial generation. To go about fixing this problem, we must disconnect from technology. Now, when we read, our concentration begins to drift, we become fatigued more easily, and overall our attention to what we read diminishes after a short while. Why is this? the answer is simply that due to our use of texting via phone and reading text over the Internet, we have become more obsessed with information and text that pertain only to ourselves. Texts on the Internet cause us to put the qualities of efficiency and immediacy above all else instead of putting our attention to complex works that require and develop our critical reading and thinking skills. Nicholas Carr asserts that our “ability to interpret text, to make the rich mental connection that form when we read deeply and without distractions, remains largely disengaged” (Carr 94). Being able to disconnect from technology can create an opportunity known as “effective sharing” (Louv 145). Effective sharing creates strong memories between family members, stronger relationships with the people around you, and better communication. As Richard Louv states in “The Nature Principals”, we can accomplish these benefits by taking a “hike, fish, tent camp, and go on digital wildlife photo expeditions” (Louv 146). Putting away electronics and “getting out in nature, even for just a 20-minute walk” will have a lasting impact on all the people that put this into practice
