Considering how many people view social media every day, it is very easy to send out false information and for it to quickly spread. We often see how false information, rumors, and lies can expectantly become true in the minds of social media users. Social media takes away a large portion of individual privacy. Jenkins demonstrates this with the example of, “Intoxicated students at a local high school use their cell phones to produce their own soft-core porn movie involving topless cheerleaders making out in the locker room. Within hours the movie is circulating the school, being downloaded by students and teachers alike and watched between classes on personal media devices,” (Jenkins 17). Jenkins explains how new media technologies allow content to flow across several different platforms. Social media quickly can spread something that maybe was only meant for certain eyes but once one person uploads it to social media within minutes’ hundreds of people too see something that they perhaps were never meant to. While internet and technology provides us with many advantages we often see how the use of technology can take a turn for the worse. Our society tremendously depends on technology to get through their everyday lives. For instance, our access to social media shows how something can be very positive and beneficial but when used in the wrong way can turn bad. Merritt Roe Smith refers to the North American Review, “The benefits of machinery are seen everywhere, felt everywhere and must abide forever,” (Smith 5). Smith conveys how evident advancements in technology are to consumers. Our lives have been made easier through our available access to technology and will only remain to be felt. Despite this, I wonder if the use of technology has taken away from having our own personal lives. Thus, while I feel technology is undoubtedly advantageous, I wonder where our future as a society will lead us as its use continues to
