Personal Experience: What Makes A Good Leader?

Transferring to a New Account Unfortunately, my time at Mass. Eye & Ear ended prematurely due to the restructuring of team leadership at another account. Consequently, a team lead was under performing at the other account, and the client asked for her to be removed. I was asked if I would take over her position and reluctantly agreed. What I immediately learned from this new account was that another key component of being a great leader is the power or skill of an individual to lead others towards the attainment of a goal.
My survival at this account that emphasized micro managing employees, doubting employee’s skills, and being critical and harsh to employees when they were underperforming or made a mistake was due solely to being positive and staying focused, these traits are what got me through. There were employee conflicts amongst my new team that were severely hindering work productivity. The team was rife with their personal problems bleeding over into their work life. I had to strategize on what each employee needed to relieve their stress and balance the work load

A great leader is not necessarily born with these key qualities, but can overtime develop them. They motivate others to achieve their full potential, lead by example in many ways and have apparent influence over their team. By harnessing and honing these targeted skills over the duration of my team lead position, I feel that I have gained more confidence in my abilities. I have learned a lot from my experiences as a team lead, and through reflecting upon my experiences, I am identifying my own strengths and weaknesses that can hinder or lead to success. The most important lessons that I have learned about leadership are: to be confident in my capabilities, remain humble and seek feedback from mentors, and most importantly never lose faith in when faced with challenges - a positive attitude will carry me
