For example, I teach the present continuous by telling them that it is like a butterfly which is always flying “continuously” and to keep flying it should have two fluttering wings. The, I draw the butterfly and put (am, is and are) on one wing and (ing) on the other wing while the body of the butterfly is the verb. Also, I ask them to draw it whenever they are stuck as it is easier for them to remember the drawing more than remembering the rule and when they do mistakes I always remind them to the butterfly as it cannot fly using one wing only.
Teacher’s Knowledge of both English Grammar and the grammar of the students’ language or languages
In my personal opinion, the teacher should be aware of the grammar of the students’ language especially in the early stages. As it helps the teacher to identify the reason of the error and work on it to avoid it …show more content…
At the same time, they should be involved in communicative and written activities to be able to use it correctly. After a while, the students will be able to use the grammar of the language efficiently without thinking about the rules. So, the grammar must be taught at the beginning and later on it will be acquired and used without thinking about the rules.
Also, it is necessary for the teacher to know the grammar of the native language so that she can relate to it in case of similarities or differences. Moreover, the knowledge of the students’ native grammar could help the teacher detect the problems and recognize why some mistakes are being done.
