Teaching college students can be challenging. But for those who love what they do the challenge is what keeps us going. Every year new students come in and out of my lecture hall. Some you will never talk to, some you somehow can’t get them to stop talking, and then others leave a lasting imprint on their fellow peers, faculty and staff. Our students are relentlessly challenging what we thought we knew about a subject and class that we have been teaching for numerous years. But as a college professor and mentor this is what we hope for. We want to walk around our campus and see our students engaging with others and accomplishing goals they have set out for themselves and when you take a step back you feel a sense of pride for them. The reality of our society today is for young people to feel pressured to have it all figured out. That unfortunately is not how life works and Jacob has shown that. Life is a continual process of adaptation and changes. Dreams will change, life will change and people will change. But when you stick to your guns, keep pursing what inspires you, work hard to get to wherever you’re going you will succeed. Tomorrow we may wake up and we will have to change everything we thought we once knew. But we must be more like Jacob. Wake up every day with the simple smile, crack the seemingly funny joke, greet your peers with respect and decency and take on each day knowing that it will be better than you expected. You can sit back and let life go by, or you can take advantage of your own success. Jacob

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Life's a journey worth taking the unbeaten path. That is why, despite looking up to my loving parents and having the utmost respect for them, I have taken a different road than they did. However, undergoing any challenge without their guiding experience can certainly prove to be an undertaking. I, a first generation college student, am the pioneer of higher education for my family. Though I join many others in lunging out into the world for the first time, I am doing so without having a father or mother to tell me how to tackle the college experience.…

Is it still College if there are not lectures? The article, “The future of the college,” by Graeme Wood brings an insightful experience into a whiny, authoritative, and forceful educational concept newly devised in the United States. A fresh idea that breaks the traditional norms of varied learning approaches and introduces a single approach – no lectures, straightforward discussion, and mandatory debating. Discarded are the norms of learning about lessons, Minerva is all about ‘experiencing’ the subject.…

    I. Review of Literature The United States aims to increase the number of additional college graduates by eight million to meet future workforce demands and to maintain global competitiveness (U.S. Department of Education, 2011). To achieve this goal, requires increasing college going and college completion among marginalized groups and would be first generation college students (FGCS) (Matthews, 2014; U.S. Department of Education, 2011). Many scholars agree that in order to increase college going among this population of students, parent and family involvement is an essential component for college access programs (Cabrera & La Nasa, 2000; Dyce, Albold, & Long, 2013; Perna & Swail, 2001; Perna & Titus, 2005; Tierney & Auerbach, 2005; Tierney,…

Reflecting back to how I was when I first arrive at the University of Central Florida I could say that I have grown a lot both academically and overall as a college student. Now that I have passed more than half of the semester I have gained confidence with what I’m doing and I think I got the hang of it. I could say that in general I am very satisfied with how I’m doing academically, I am doing well in both of my courses. Another thing that I could say is that not only have I already taken away a lot from UCF but the book “The Other Wes Moore” by Wes Moore that was assigned for us to read has taught me a lot.
