Throughout the years, families across our nation have used different ways to discipline and educate their children. While one family chooses to use the old fashioned spanking method (also known as corporal discipline), another family right across the street chooses to use different methods that restrict hitting a child and focuses more on using strategic ways to discipline their young ones. So what is the best way to discipline children in today 's society? It is indeed, a very debatable issue that has many different opinions and viewpoints. Although, time and statistics have shown it is most effective to use the old fashioned spanking method to discipline and educate children in between the ages of five and twelve. The use of disciplining a child using corporal methods should always be driven with love and with the child’s best interests in mind. As a mother or father who seeks to raise a child who is obedient and respectful, one must use corporal discipline in a loving way. People all over make the argument that corporal discipline is a way of abusing a child. Corporal discipline is not intended for causing harm to a child whatsoever. Child abuse and corporal discipline are two very different things that get put into the same category all too often. If one who disagrees with spanking makes the argument that it is too violent and cruel, then one who agrees with spanking can argue that taking away privileges and grounding entails locking children up in dark rooms and not providing food and water. Making the argument that spanking is too harsh, violent or cruel misguides what corporal discipline is and it’s purposes. Spanking a child for disciplinary reasons and for the love of the child is not abuse, beating and whipping a child endlessly until scars are created
