Method and Procedures
The setting was in two places: special education classroom and general education classroom. The special education classroom was used to instruct students on how to recruit teacher attention. The instruction was conducted with each student individually while no other student was around. The general education classroom was used to observe the target behaviors of student recruitment and teacher praise. A routine for attain the teacher’s attention during the 30 minutes of homeroom period was already established in the general education class. A simple description of the procedure for acquiring teacher’s attention is that students are expected to wait in line or raising their hand to obtain the teacher’s attention and then be patient while waiting for assistance.
Observations were conducted by a primary observer and a secondary observer. The observers were discrete to ensure students did not observe them with the special education teacher or in the special education classroom. It was noted earlier about the activity level of most classrooms. Therefore, teachers may miss an opportunity to praise a student’s appropriate behavior. However, if a simple and effective reinforcer such as teacher praise can produce these results, it would be in the best interest of students and teachers to utilize this natural resource. The individual training session discussed that it only took two consecutive 20 minute sessions for the students to learn appropriate steps to seek the teacher’s attention.
