238). If a student does not understand something the first time new material is presented, then the student must persevere by encouragement from teachers. I feel that most, if not all, of my 6th grade teachers embodied this characteristic. For example, when my orchestra teacher would assign a new piece of music for the class to learn, he would encourage students to practice outside of class. Mastery of the piece of music could be important for an upcoming concert at school. In addition, my math teacher would encourage students to apply tough material from class to their lives outside of school, such as measuring ingredients for baking or calculating sale prices at a store. On the other hand, my gym teacher did not encourage students to try harder in class. The quality of student effort into activities such as running a mile for a test did not count towards the overall grade. In fact, if a student did the work, no matter the quality, he or she would receive an A in the class. I think that this type of mentality could repeat in later coursework for students, which would diminish the amount of effort put into an assignment or studying for a test.
