Interpersonal Communication Weaknesses

Taking Interpersonal Communication has really opened up my eyes on what it takes to be a great communicator and how communicating is so important in relationships. Before taking the class I had no idea how many complex aspects there are in communications and how they can reflect on culture, religion, upbringing, and so on. I realized from past and present relationships I have many strengths as well as many weaknesses to these aspects.

Growing up in a middle class family in Minnesota I got to meet a lot different people from different backgrounds, this was because I went to public school. Majority of my friends growing up and now I have met through playing different sports such as, basketball, baseball, and football.Without these sports

These include balancing both of our interests, differentiating, emotional support, and giving advice when needed. I usually go quickly to the initiating stage to the experimenting stage. The experimenting stage is a good way to find out what interests that person has and whether or not I want to keep that relationship going. During the experimenting stage some people complain about how much they hate small talk, but I really enjoy it. It’s fun learning something new about the person you are just meeting for the first time(Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor II, 2014). For instance, when I go to my friends house their parents always start up small talk and ask me thing like, “How’s school going”, “How’s work going”, “How are your Mom and Dad?” I really enjoy that because it shows they care about getting to know me as much as I care to get to know them. During the Thanksgiving break I was very emotional supportive of my friend. She told me about how stressed out she was at college and how she wanted to drop out. I told her everything was going to be okay and that she wasn’t going through this alone. I also told her that I would be there for whatever she needed help with. Recently she told me things are getting a lot better and she feels she can make it through finals week. My girlfriend and I have a lot of the same interests such as going to the movies, going to parties, and going mini golfing. However, we have realized we …show more content…
Some of my downfalls include not vocalizing feelings, holding grudges, and nonverbal communications. One thing I really want to work hard on is vocalizing my feelings towards someone. I’m always scared that if I say the wrong thing to someone that they will get their feeling hurt. That causes me to not tell the complete truth sometimes, which can be damaging to the relationship in the end. Nonverbal communication is another big downfall of mine. It is hard for me to tell how a person is feeling by their body language. Sometimes I might think the person is happy or fine but they are actually mad at me, or if the person tells me they are fine I will sometimes believe them by not reading their body language correctly. I often hold grudges of things people have done to me in the past. For example my friend ditched me to go hang out with his girlfriend and took me a very long time for me to get over it. I always bring it up when he ask me to hang out with him, I say jokingly, “I’m going to go hang out with my girlfriend

On the surface I think I am like most students: I take university seriously, I have my own visions for the future that I am determined to make happen, and I do not expect anyone to lead my way. What makes me different from the rest of the crowd though is how I love to take part organizing something for the greater good. During my school years, I have joined several school organizations which has taught me how to work well in team and how to work under pressure. Previous experience has also given me a considerable amount of confidence in my interpersonal communication skills. I look forward to putting this skills and experiences in this Peace tour as a leader.…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…
