My Tae Kwon-Do Journey

I want to get my black belt because I don’t ever want to end my Tae Kwon-Do journey. Tae Kwon-Do has played a massive part in my life over the last four years and has helped me achieve things I would never dream of being able to do, for example it has helped improve my confidence greatly. I used to feel sick to the stomach at the thought of having to do anything while people were watching me however with my belt round my waist I feel powerful and that I can do anything as long as I try and don’t give up. I want to be able to help lower grades discover a side of them they didn’t think they had just as my instructors did with me.
When I started Tae Kwon-Do, January 2014, I didn’t think I would be able to accomplish this much in a relatively short space of time because when I saw everyone else at the club they looked amazing at what they were doing. I never thought I would be able to kick with my foot in the correct position and with the kick being higher than my belt. However, I soon realised that as long as you keep working on something you can do it as long as you have the drive to do so. You need to have integrity if you wish to be successful in Tae Kwon-Do because you need to understand and realise that you did something wrong in order to improve it however this is also a skill you need outside the dojang. You can build tight connections with people of different ages. Lots of people who are at my Tae Kwon-Do club also go to school and its interesting to think that these people you talk to both at school and in the dojang wouldn’t be apart of your life if you had never taken your first Tae Kwon-Do lesson and fallen in love the sport. Another aspect of Tae Kwon-Do I really love is competitions; I have now done four and becoming a black belt will just open more doors for me in so many aspects of my

Sometimes in life you arrive at a place or a time, either physically or mentally, to which the extent of the journey is not immediately obvious. Always aware of the destination, yet focused more on immediate challenges, at some point you look up and realize just how far you have gone, and think “How did I get here?” This essay is a brief chronicle of my personal journey into the ranks of Tang Soo Do toward Cho Dan, of how Tang Soo Do philosophy has incorporated itself into my life, and what it means to me to become a part of the Tang Soo Do black belt community. I’ve never been very good at sports. It didn’t seem to matter whether the sport was an individual or team effort; most of my sporting endeavors have been short-lived to say the least.…

Black Belt Issues Imagine a scenario where someone has been working hard to achieve something that they’ve been dying to have for four years, and then suddenly right as the time came to finally receive it something happens and now there seems to be no way to get it at all. Think of how they’d react, and more importantly, how they’d feel. That feeling is what I went through when I first moved to Webb City.…

There is a saying that I heard long ago that has impacted my life in more ways than one. “Everyone has a sad story”, but the difference between myself and others is that I did not let it crush me, I let it inspire me. A few years ago when I wasn’t sure what sport to pursue, my father introduced me to CrossFit. CrossFit is a form of physical training that uses intense cardiovascular movements blended with Olympic weightlifting maneuvers for a total body work out.…

If I was never a black belt I would never be able to do talk to parents. I learned to talk to parents because they would ask me how was there kid today and I had to respond to them. I learned to speak better and with more confidence. It was scary at times but I know I can do it and can overcome anything with a little help from Mister Sam, Miss Alley, my family and my friends because I know they will help me up.…

I would say that achieving the level of black belt is liberating in a way, because not only is it a regression to the basics, it removes the material aspect of the game. Learning karate transcends from a race to the next colour, to an intimate experience of the self. This is something I experienced when I got my black belt three years ago. I feel like at that point, learning Kata was not a step towards getting my next belt; it was learning kata for the sake of learning it. Rather than extrinsically enjoying learning, which involves enjoying the end goal of an action, it became intrinsic enjoyment, which is the enjoyment of the action…

When it came time to choose what sport I wanted to do I chose wrestling, because as Dan Gable eloquently said “Once you’ve wrestled everything else in life is easy.” When I first started wrestling I was lazy and disinterested. I tended to float through life not putting forth my best effort. I soon realized wrestling and anything else I decided to do would require massive amounts of dedication; it caused me to reevaluate myself and what I wanted to do with my life.…

In the locker room are Dan and Jason. I say hello and continue on to my locker. More people come in and everyone starts talking about how bad their day was. It's almost a daily contest to see who can have bragging rights for having the worst day, perhaps they want sympathy or maybe they just like to complain a lot. I find it humorous that a bunch of guys who come in every day to train and beat on each other can complain so much, so I laugh at them and leave the locker room.…
