Suicide Warning Signs

When an individual has a mental health disorder, the risk for self-injury or suicide increases. Suicide is the United States’ 10th leading cause of death, having 12.6 deaths per 100,000 individuals. It is also known that out of the estimated 1 million attempted suicides per year, approximately 90% of individuals who commit suicide successfully have a mental disorder than can potentially be treated. There are many factors that you can observe for to catch an individual preparing to kill themselves. Suicide warning signs are things to observe for that indicate if an individual is at a higher risk for attempt of suicide. These signs can be seen though what an individual says, how they behave, or what their mood projects as (American Foundation, 2015). In this paper the writer will discuss two articles studied on suicide prevention interventions. The two articles indicate that a magnet with suicide warning signs and hotline numbers, as well as listening without judging, offering goal-achieving strategies, and age specific support groups were successful suicide prevention interventions used for adolescents and college students. In the article by Sise, et al. (2011), a tool used to enhance suicide prevention in college students is studied. The purpose of the study was to raise awareness …show more content…
