My parents raised me to love my neighbor as myself, and to treat others the way that I want to be treated. I just assumed that this goes for everyone, including those of other races. My opinion of race is based on love. And not the love that I can give, but the agape love that Jesus provides. The love that Jesus died to show.…

Humans acquire racial views through family relationships, socialization and cultural influences. In the movie Crash, the issue of racism was examined and expressed through the challenges the main characters faced and how they were intertwined with one another. Through these characters, we begin to see that humans learn from their experiences. For example, when the older white cop found out that his father’s insurance got rejected, he took out his anger on the African American couple who was driving home. When the cop molested the African American woman in front of her husband, he was exerting his power over them.…

“White” Like Me At the heart of American culture is the concept of racism; a continuous cycle perpetuated through years of injustice by slavery, violence, segregation, and hatred. Much like the symbolic “tree of life”, racism’s roots extend deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from each member of society. Yet in that survival tactic, it unconsciously steals a little more from one side—this is white privilege. “White privilege” is a mere social construction by which the dominant white group justifies their advantages and higher quality of life through diminution of people of color. To be a member of the white race, it is easy to overlook subtle inequalities—such as the wealth gap, career opportunities, education, etc.…

I have always viewed racism as people of other color being discriminated against. Most people view privilege as being a favored state, meaning that by birth or luck a person is at an advantage to another. McIntosh states that privilege can also be viewed as a state of dominance because of one’s race or sex. I disagree that privilege should be viewed as dominance because individuals who are privileged do not necessarily set out to intentionally control others. McIntosh discusses what can be done to bring an end to white and male privilege.…

What is white privilege? There have been many police brutality reports that show young black men being killed by white officers for no reason. The officers accused do not get convicted properly. The slave masters used this technique to produce animosity amongst the slaves. Post slavery African Americans are still dealing with the mental issues of shadeism today. I often felt over looked because I was darker, but learned to use it as an advantage. I was encouraged by my mother and became more confident in my skin. This privilege creates an ease that other races do not have, nor will they ever have, until the white race acknowledges that privilege exists. The white race acknowledging their privilege would mean agreeing that racism exists, and the white man would have to give up his power, agreeing that the other races have been oppressed by the white race. The racial identity of a white male or white female seems to be hidden, underlying, and almost secretive. "White" people have been placed on a pedestal for a long time, leading to stereotypes about other races that perpetuate the inequality(Recupero pg 1). White privilege has existed throughout history and is still a touchy subject in white society today.…

I was aware about my race, but always felt like I was white, just like my friends. When I was 18 years old, I moved for college where 85% of the student population was white. I even made a joke that I was accepted to the school because they needed to admit people of color. I felt at ease being surrounded by white people, similar to the ones that I grew up with, but a part of me felt guilty for never embracing my Hispanic side. Dalmage (2013) describes how multiracial children are facing unending demands to choose a side, stake a claim, and adhere to the rules of the race that they identify with.…

My Multicultural America Learning about race and ethnicity the past couple of weeks has been very eye opening for me. I am a middle class Caucasian girl that has never really had to deal with or even think about any of the things that many other people in American have influence their lives every single day. As much as we want to believe that racism is dead and there is no discrimination anymore, that just isn’t true. I don’t really feel like I can even talk about race and ethnicity because I have always been in a very homogenous environment. There weren’t very many kids of other ethnicities or races in my school and that was basically the only place I interacted with other kids my age besides church but because it was such a small town…

Conferred dominance is the act of giving one group unearned control over another group. Additionally, unearned advantage is the privilege that one group holds over society. An example of this can illustrated though the hierarchy system where white men are usually on top. This “unearned enticement” gives the dominant group an advantage based on their race, gender, place of birth, etc. Furthermore, a contemporary example of unearned advantage can be the wage gap between men and women.…

For years, race has been a subject of controversy between those of different color. We can trace racial discrepancies in America back to the latter half of the 1800s, and still over 200 years later, struggles with race exist in the form of prejudice, discrimination, and bigotry. Adam Zyglis’s “Race and America” political cartoon demonstrates the correlation between America’s symbolic Uncle Sam and the issues of strife amongst the diverse cultures, both in appearance and belief, in order to depict the struggle of present day race relations. The first issue Uncle Sam stumbles over is the issue of prejudice. Specifically, descriptive words such as “hardworking,” “violent,” and “lazy” are coined to different perspectives when attributed to Hispanic…
