The Importance Of Success In School

Decent Essays
One thing that has drawn me to City Year is their belief that at risk students should be given the opportunity to succeed. I strongly support this belief because I feel that education is the foundation for success in life. As well,, I understand and have witnessed firsthand how academic achievement can be closely tied in with their self-concept. Children attend school for the majority of their lives so it is very easy for them to feel that negative performance in school is directly related to their ability and self-worth. I believe that it is important for someone to let these at risk children know that that they are capable of receiving a quality education. I believe that this given me a strong foundation for working with children and has greatly prepared me to work with City Year. My communication skills has greatly improved. As well, I have learned how to tailor my message to complement different learning styles. As an athlete I have always been able to pick up on new skills and techniques by watching a demonstration a few times. However, as a coach I have worked with individuals who do not learn the same way. They need explanation as well as an example. This experience has allowed me to learn how to coach on the fly and communicate instructions that will be beneficial to all of my …show more content…
Fortunately, it has taken on a new meaning for me now. I would like for the students I work with to demonstrate compassion, love, determination, perseverance, and a strong self-image. However, for my students to demonstrate this I first have to display this example. At the end of my City Year my students will believe in their abilities as students but also as agents of change. They will understand how important it is to find something they are passionate about and to follow it with their whole heart. They will believe in their ability as students, but also will understand that a bad grade doesn’t change their worth. My students will be the first to try something new. As well, they will be leaders amongst their peers and will encourage them to take the less traveled road. I believe this all possible because it is the change I would like to see in myself. If I can be this person for my students then they will learn from my example. As well, I hope that the community I work with will be empowered at the end of my year

Observation: The YMCA daycare program is very different from Hope. I went back and forth between the two classrooms with children from ages 2 to 4 and I even spent a bit of time in the infant room. I learned more about the different temperaments of the children and how to address them. In addition, I also saw how children three to four years of age did not know how to say what they wanted so they would hit and throw things. I would have to say the biggest thing that I learned today was figuring how to get a positive behavior and not to reinforce a negative behavior.…

A new journey in my life began on August 13th, 2014 as my school principal cut the red ribbon celebrating the opening of a brand new high school. Little did I know, it would become a journey of growth and unique experiences unlike any before it, further refining and adding to my inner sculpture of identity and talent. I was going to Liberty High School, therefore it was necessary that I adapt--quickly, yet strategically. Throughout my life, I had never imagined that my high school experience would reach and exceed my expectations in the way that it did. I had the unique opportunity most people don’t get in life: to be part of a grassroots movement in establishing a culture that would enrich future students with tradition and values for many years to come.…

The choice to pursue a career as a physician assistant (PA) was appealing to me from the moment I first heard about it. I knew I wanted to untangle challenging cases and combine a career of unrelenting compassion and precociousness. I realized that I possess a dual passion for medicine and teaching. I believe that the dual interests were inspired by my mom, an educator, and the influence of another teacher who taught me about the PA career. This teacher thought she wanted to be a PA; however, she quickly realized her disparate characteristics were incongruent to the field.…
