The Importance Of Studying Abroad Essay

The importance of studying abroad is a concept that I believe is a vital source of education and is one that is essential for everyone to experience, especially the Black woman. It is for this reason that I without a doubt believe that this is something I definitely need to experience before I graduate from Spelman College. The experience to study abroad would be so important for me because it would enhance my education and push my personal growth beyond boundaries that I don’t believe I would reach by only experiencing an American education. Personal growth is something bound to occur when being in an unfamiliar environment in unfamiliar situations and this is the part that I am honestly looking forward to the most. Being in Santo Domingo for a semester will increase my self confidence, and serve as the catalyst that I need to increase my maturity and understanding of international relations and different cultures. I believe that what I will take away the most from my experience is a heightened understanding of our own cultural values and biases. This is so important because I realize that in America we often take opportunities and general everyday life for granted. I have never wanted to be the type of person to do that and be ignorant about other nations and cultures. I realize the importance of being confident in American education and I am aware of the opportunities that are here that are not always accessible in different countries, however I am not arrogant about my education and am extremely open to demonstrating this when I go abroad.
