They happen more often than you think. That car crash that killed 2 people, the child who drowned last week, your friend’s aunt’s death. We are presented with all these tragedies in our daily lives and we don’t always understand the impact they have on our disposition. While some are affected more than others, we can conclusively say that these events have negative impacts on our life in some way. And, this unnecessary stress in our life does not always come in the form of grief and mourning, it quite often can come inadvertently from the events we watch on the news or hear from the media about our nation and the world. Threats of nuclear war between the United States and North Korea, climate change, foreign conflicts, and I think all of us could agree November 8th, 2016, were all causes of the stress that we often feel quite prevalently in our lives. Now that we have seen just how commonplace these issues are in our daily lives, let’s look at why this topic is significant. A study by the Wall Street Journal seeked to bring forth conclusions on the effects of stress on children’s learning, and this is what they came up with: “Our findings indicate that stress in the classroom environment affects children’s likelihood of exhibiting learning problems (difficulties with attentiveness, task persistence, and flexibility), externalizing problems (frequency with which the child argues, fights, disturbs ongoing activities, and acts impulsively), problems interacting with peers (difficulties in forming friendships, dealing with other children, expressing feelings, and showing sensitivity, or internalizing problems (presence of anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, and sadness in the child). These findings suggest that stress — in the form of negative classroom conditions — negatively affects the way children pay attention in class, stay on task, and are able to move from one activity to
