My Reflection Of Myself As A Writer

Decent Essays
This semester has been very different from my past years of schooling. This was my initial college semester. I learned a lot from this course, along with my other ones too. I have overcome my first obstacles at writing and have developed my skills even farther. This will continue to improve as I indulge myself into writing more essays and as I gather more knowledge. If I were to compare my first essay to my last essay, I believe that there would be a noticeable improvement. Although I notice my improvement, I am able to notice my flaws as a writer. Every writer has a weakness, whether it is finding their train of thought or a struggle with grammar. We all have a key weakness that we know about ourselves. My weakness is transitioning from one …show more content…
I never liked doing outlines, and I thought they were a waste of time. I did most of my research before writing my outline and as Professor Hopp wanted I wrote underneath my citations what they talked about. This made writing my paper a lot easier, and it helped writing the outline. The outline was a great backbone to the essay as I was able to relate back to it whenever and it helped keep my ideas in check. I enjoyed this paper because of the extensive research that had to be done. It helped me think more deeply about how I could write about something the effects my life, but can also be happening everywhere. Doing research on the environment was also quite interesting as that is another huge problem the human population face. Environmental pollution is a large scale problem but has to be fixed by small-scale populations to create a difference. My work over this semester has showed off that I am able to do efficient research on a subject. One of the best ways to proof to show the readers that you know what you are talking about is to do research and use reliable sources to back up your arguments. This is what makes or breaks the paper. When I am writing a paper, I like to get to the point and not fluff it up with a bunch of unneeded topics. I also like to incorporate a little about me if it is appropriate, it helps the audience relate better to the passage if they can connect with you on a more personal

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

The outline acts as the map for the paper and will show the writer where to go. He believes that when writing, it is always better to prepare than rather than produce. Taking the time to make an outline and prepare what is going to be said in the paper, rather than just going and writing it without any plan, will pay off according to Hjortshoj. I agree with a difference with Hjortshoj views on making outlines because when making an outline, time has to be put into it to make sure that is it an affective outline. If…

I should graduate English 101 because I worked hard, changed my attitude and perspective, and buckled down and challenged myself when it came to my writing. Throughout this course, I found myself becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. I challenged myself not only when it came to the topics I chose but, I also dug to find small connections that made a big difference by the end of the paper. I also pushed myself to learn and incorporate new ideas and techniques within my writing. In my portfolio I showed my growth from highschool to college and my growth through my time at the college.…

Before the start of the school year I was completely stressed out due to the idea that I was going taking two college level classes. All I ever hear about college is that it’s full of sleepless nights and ramen noodle diets. I was initially expecting this year to be physically and emotionally draining, but as I began to initiate myself into the dual credit program, I found it to be less stressful than I had originally expected. This semester was full of learning experiences. My writing style, in the past, was terrible.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
