An array of events takes place during the University of Alabama’s homecoming week festivites. In the midst of all the events the university partakes in, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) hosts an annual step show broadcasting the different talents and attributes the African American Greek System has to offer. The National Pan-Hellenic Council first made its debut on Alabama’s campus in 1974 housing a total of eight sororities and fraternities of the “Divine 9.” A part of the NPHC’s over all mission is to foster scholarship, community service, and to support academic excellence all the while providing a variety of programs intended to enrich the cultural experience of the University of Alabama’s student body. The music selection, the dancing and the host of the event just to name a few would not have been the typical first choice at any of the other campus wide occasions. The host was an Internet made celebrity who is known amongst this generation for his popular Vine posts. The dancing consisted of today’s most popular dance moves known as the Whip and the Nae Nae and a variety of other dance combinations were performed that kept the audience intrigued and ready for more. The music selection included all of the latest hip-hop songs, which was a sure way to keep the crowd’s attention and keep them singing along. Attending several other events around campus and attending the step show definitely gives students the opportunity to experience the ways different cultures classify their meaning of a good …show more content…
Several of the other attributes of the show also showed a resemblance in my culture, but on the whole those two luxuries were more closely related than any others. Because I grew up in a generation that is admirable of all things technology related and both the host, and the dance moves that were reflected in the step show were made popular through the internet, in a sense the step show also reflected myself as well as many of that were also in attendance. Whether then NPHC intended to or not, their step show production became a learning lesson for me. The production was way deeper than a competition; it is history and tradition for the fraternities and sororities that preformed. No matter the outcome of the event, win or lose, the Greek organizations are simply doing what was passed down to them by their previous members and they are doing what they are accustomed too.
