Sport nutrition relates to athletic performance and is the study and practice of nutrition and diet for an athlete. Sport nutrition deals with nutrients such as supplements, vitamins and minerals for athletes. Moreover, organic substances like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are also a part of sport nutrition. Sport nutrition is a term that is under the umbrella of exercise science along with biomechanics, clinical exercise physiology, motor behavior, athletic training, sports medicine and sport and exercise psychology. Staying active helps a person maintain their flexibility, strength and endurance as they begin to age (Carmont, 2012). Nonetheless, a diet is considered as the cornerstone for maintaining optimal health and also an athlete should learn to manage and prevent a wide range of medical conditions (Pyne, 2016). A proper diet with the adequate amount of nutrition such as fats, carbohydrates, proteins and water will definitely help provide the energy that is required. In addition, an athlete should have an understanding of the level of nutrition knowledge and applying it to their everyday lives. On a daily basis, there is a specific amount of nutrients an athlete should consume. As an athlete, the total amount of carbohydrate intake should be between sixty and seventy percent (Schenker, 2012). The amount of protein intake actually varies depending on the athlete. Due to the fact that during extreme physical activity, the muscle tissue then becomes an energy source because there is not enough of fat and carbohydrates consumed. Therefore, it is required to maintain a balance of the intake of protein every day to be able to make up for the amount of protein that is lost inside the muscle tissue during the increase of the extreme intensity that takes place during training.
