Becoming The Elderly

The elderly in TV have been sparse and few in between due to incorrect stereotypes that have been put upon them. In more recent years, some of the aged have started coming forward and demanding more respect, and more major roles in the television industry. People like Dick Van Dyke, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda who have in their later years fought for and were given the roles that the elderly truly deserve as shown by the articles we read in class about them. One woman who did not even reach much of her fame until she was into her sixties is Betty White, and she is definitely the person I would representing the older generations to TV producers. Mrs.White was the first woman of many things from jobs to awards she won. She was the first …show more content…
Becoming elderly is something that in the past I have not looked forward to, and beginning work in a field filled with older patients, I was becoming greatly worried. After this class though, many of my worries have faded. From all of the speakers, articles, and knowledge I have gained from the professor, it has become clear to me that becoming older can be a positive rather than a negative. By keeping an open mind, exercise, and many other things, staying lively is a possibility. The knowledge I have gained will be extremely useful in my professional career in many ways. Currently working in a long term care and rehab home for the elderly, I am constantly seeing the negative side of becoming elderly. With this useful information though, I have been able to keep a good attitude, and been able to help patients themselves see and reach the positive side of becoming an older person. As I progress in my career in the health field, I will continue to use this knowledge as the people over 65 years of age are becoming the most populated group in our country. Overall this class has been extremely helpful towards having a better open mind, and becoming a better and more professional …show more content…
A sage is someone who you are always able to trust and know to give you the correct and wise advice. Becoming a sage and growing in spirituality can easily go hand in hand because of the reason that they both almost always result in that individual becoming a better person. Spirituality is something that most people are not aware of as they think that it is something that is coinciding with religion, when it fact it is not. Spirituality, like saging, changes in definition from person to person as the idea of spirituality is so free flowing. Spirituality is, to me at least, how at peace you are with your own soul and the way you have lived your life and are improving it for the better of not only yourself but also others. Saging and growing in spirituality can work together in that they are the conscious and unconscious effort of becoming an overall better person. A large problem though is that most people, even those who have these attributes, do not understand, or even know, what saging and spirituality are. Giving more attention to these two could greatly improve the way that the elderly connect and mesh with younger generations. Improving their train of thought, the correctness of their own wisdom, and how to even convey a positive message or lesson they have learned throughout their time will increase in extremely

We often times associate retirement with an excessive amount and spare time. I can only assume that contributing to society is a wish or desire we all wish to fulfill, regardless of our age. The results in this study made me realize that a successful part of aging may also include challenging oneself and learning something new each and every day, whether it be inside a classroom or though lived experiences. For many reasons individuals may not be able to attain the levels of education they would have wanted to. Life does happen, after all.…

Describe Your Feelings and Beliefs on Aging in the United States Looking back from the time I started my nursing career to the present, I have seen how the image of the older adults has evolved from “the stereotypical views and images associated with ageing” (Grant, 2001, p. 777), to a more positive regard of the older population. In addition, Healthy People (HP) 2020’s focus on “maintaining the quality of life and wellness of older adults” (HP 2020, 2015) has set new targets for nursing education. Nursing faculty are urged to “integrate older adult content throughout nursing programmes to enhance nursing practice with an ageing population” (Baumbusch, Dahlke, & Phinney, 2012, p. 2550).…

In fact, some people, even adults, are hesitant to spend time with elderly people because it can remind them of their own mortality. [5] There’s no doubt that some aspect of aging will be uncomfortable or undesirable. Most seniors are mentally and physically active regardless of age with great contributions to society. Societal norms marginalize seniors, treat them with disrespect, and make them feel unwelcome. With the onsets of ageism, seniors are robbed of choice, independence, and dignity. Being a part of the younger generation one must embrace our elders and show them the respect they deserve and welcome them as a part of society. We may be young, but our families are aging, and one day we will be put in a position of ageism.…

Last April she celebrated her 76th birthday and appears to be aging successfully according to John Rowe and Robert Kahn (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). Rowe and Kahn define successful aging as maintaining physical health, cognitive abilities, being involved in social and productive activities, and being satisfied with life. (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). When asked questions regarding the physical domain, several things my grandmother mentioned are common changes that occur in late adulthood.…

Reflection Essay Valerie and I made a film about each person that we spent time with in the Music and Memory program. We had different main goals that drove each of our films. Our main goal for Ruth’s video was to represent her life in Indiana in the 1930s, a time that she spent most of our time together talking about, and the music that was present and that she loved during this time, and all the little things that were different back then like farming. For Lynn’s video, we wanted to let people know of his love for a wide variety of genres of music and the stories that came from learning them.…
