There is a difference between spiritual leadership and church, fellowship, ministry and organisational leadership. Leadership is not spiritual because it was set up by a church or a religious body. A more radical way of saying this is that leadership is not spiritual because it was instituted by a spiritual man or woman. The experience of Samuel in the house of Jesse gives credence to this assertion. Samuel was a spiritual man, but if he had anointed Eliab as king of Israel because he saw and admired certain qualities in Eliab, his spirituality would not have made Eliab's leadership spiritual. This is because Eliab was not chosen by God to be the head over Israel at that time.

In fact, Jesus is the embodiment of spirituality, that is, Jesus is God's standard and measurement for spirituality. It is His life and ministry that God uses to measure spirituality. To understand what is meant by Jesus being God's standard for spirituality is to ask: how did Jesus obey, talk, work, eat, pray, fast, and so on. It is also to find out how He handled friends, enemies, elders, juniors, followers, critics, praise-singers, and others. The way He did any of these things becomes the yardstick for us.
