TIn her last years, my grandmother Jean Coleman VanDieren was cared for by skilled professionals at St. Joseph 's Bluffs Nursing Home in Jefferson City, Missouri, and I am so thankful and appreciative for the outstanding care the staff provided. I am also deeply grateful for the spiritual care and guidance given by Chaplain Mueller as well. My grandmother´s battle with Parkinson’s Disease was not easy, and the care and attention required was demanding. I have a newfound appreciation for those who work in this capacity and will always remember this particular nursing staff at St. Joseph’s Bluffs. Before my grandmother came to live at St. Joseph 's Bluffs, she lived in Leawood, Kansas, where she worked. When her Parkinson’s had progressed to the point where she could no longer live alone, she moved into an assisted living facility called Westbrook Terrace, also in Jefferson City, Missouri. This was a decision she and my father made together. She wanted to be close to her grandchildren, and our family wanted to be able to spend as much time as possible with her. While at Westbrook, she thrived. She was able to come and go as she pleased and even attended a small garden she planted on the grounds. The friends she made at Westbrook were very special to her, and she hated to leave.

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

Being on disability and having a physical limitation given to her from a doctor meant that my grandmother would not be able to get a job or be as active as she used to be in her daily life. These limitations certainly did not fit into my grandmother’s plan of her future. Over the next six years I’ve watched my grandma persevere to get back to the way of life she wanted for herself. In the dawn of her recovery she reluctantly took the doctors advice and got people to help her simple tasks such as bringing in groceries from her car. Older adults have always played an important role in my life, which has led me to have a positive outlook on old age. When I think of old age, I see a wise individual who is eager to spend time with family and friends and enjoys giving back to the community in their free time. This is view is largely shaped by my grandparents, who each at different levels of physical decline, are still very active in the community. In recent years I have had the privilege of working and volunteering at Pembina Place Personal Care Home. This experience has exposed me to individuals who are further declined than my grandparents, and who are involved in little to no outside community activities.…
