Personal Narrative: My High School Environment

Improved Essays
To some, thinking about high school principals may come with a negative connotation resulting from a disciplinary visit to the office or from a lack of understanding between the two sides. Their principals may seem too overbearing, scrutinize the most minor offenses, and use intimidation to get their way. My high school principal, Mr. Timothy Olson, in no way fits that description. He fosters an open environment, Roncalli High School, where he encourages students to express their individuality. Mr. Olson does not separate himself from his students; He meshes with them in order to become relatable. As I walked into my old high school on a Friday afternoon, I had a seemingly normal item – a Coke bottle – in my hand along with a folder. With …show more content…
No idea presented to him was to be scoffed at or mocked. If someone had a good idea, he helped make the idea reality. Innovation was key to changing an environment. If someone did not like something, then that person should change it. Nobody gets anywhere by complaining. Making great strides for improvement leads to making progress. In order to enhance his innovative environment, Collins often stated, “Always maintain a spirit of discontent.” There is no harm in trying something new. If it results in failure, move on. It is acceptable to fail.
Their relationship continued into adulthood. As a student, Brother Collins respected him. As a principal, Brother Collins respected him. Things never changed as their positions changed. Even to this day, Mr. Olson reflects on Brother Fidelis Michael Collins’ philosophy.
I have personally seen Brother Collins’ influence through Mr. Olson’s actions. My high school constantly changed and adapted to students’ wants and needs. For instance, my school changed the cell phone policy in order to parallel our culture’s use of technology. Instead of never being able to use cell phones during the day, we were now able to use our cell phones at our morning break and at lunch. Furthermore, throughout my four years of high school, I had never felt disrespected. I was treated as a human being that deserved great dignity.
His Leadership

The mission statement is readily available throughout the school, stating, "The mission of Roncalli High School is to educate in the Catholic traditions of spiritual growth, life-long service, and academic excellence.” It is painted onto the walls, written in email signatures, and is displayed on other school-relation media. Clearly seen, he has done a very effective job at explicitly stating the school’s vision. Mr. Olson thoroughly recognizes not only his strengths, but also his weaknesses. Convincing others often comes easy. Going along with that, if he is passionate about something, he is able to spark passion within others. Lastly, he is able to look beyond the present to where his vision is leading him. On the other hand, he is not the best at communicating fully with others. He is more likely to fix a problem instead of letting the person know they have done wrong. Furthermore, although Mr. Olson is in an evaluative position, he is not comfortable with it. Giving harsh or unwanted feedback does not come

For a school/student relationship to be mutually beneficial, values and visions need to be shared and supported. Ursuline’s motto, "I will serve" is almost identical to Wellesley College’s, "Non Ministrari, sed Ministrare," "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister. " Ursuline’s traditions of excellence in education, respect for the uniqueness of the individual, development of the whole person, community and family spirit, cultivation of leadership qualities and willingness to serve others, is similar to Wellesley’s mission of providing an excellent liberal arts education for women who will make a difference in the world. Jennifer has grown up in a Catholic home that embraces and tries to embody these values while leading by example.…

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

The Power of Leadership In every school that exhibits strength, one will see a leader that empowers the staff to achieve their goals. Strong leadership entails one who shares a vision with their staff in order to produce growth for the students. Without a leader, teachers will have to take on many other roles that distract their focus from their daily classroom routines. Furthermore, I believe that a successful school needs a principal to oversee the school culture, provide instructional leadership, and exemplify an understanding of state standards.…
