Space is arguably one of the most important and powerful elements of architecture. Before architecture was the building and making of buildings, now in more recent times architecture is also considered the study and interpretation of space. In terms of architecture space is not empty. It has the potential to become a place where people interact and go about their daily lives. Space utilizes many modifying elements for an architectural reason to enhance the experience of occupying a certain space. Through the effective usage of space an architect can manipulate a person’s emotions and feelings. A large space can make an individual feel free and liberating, just as a small space can feel claustrophobic and incarcerated. An architect that is known for creating effective spaces through the usage of light, color, structure etc. is Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. …show more content…
Mies wanted to prove that people were capable of living comfortably with just the minimum necessities. The house is elevated to define the transitional space between the interior of a building and the outdoors. It is also to rise above the flood plain of the Fox River. The Farnsworth house is known for its in-between space. The glass wall surrounding the house encloses the interior of the house, but it still provides visibility to the outside blending the outside to the inside. The glass wall also provides natural lighting to the whole house, the only use of artificial lighting comes at night or bad weather conditions. Most of the house is exposed to the outside world the only space enclosed by solid walls are of the rooms that require privacy, the bathrooms. The solid walls are also a distinct separation between the beds and the dining table. The organization of space within the house is defined by the placement of furniture. The space the two separate beds occupy may each represent a bedroom, while dining table represents the dining
