The Importance Of Soliloquy In Othello By William Shakespeare

Decent Essays
“She should have died hereafter” this quote, referring to his wife’s suicide, comes from one of Macbeth’s soliloquies at the end of the play. It illustrates perfectly Macbeth’s state of mind at the end of the play. He is wicked and resigned to fate. In the play “Macbeth,” Macbeth murders the King and everyone around him to become King himself and at first, he gets away with his wicked act. At the beginning of the play we can see the weakness in him, not wanting to do the wrong thing to get what he wants, he is conflicted. However, as we read the play we can see the transformation in him as he becomes less weak, less conflicted and more wicked and sure of his actions to the point where even the death of his wife fails to make him question them. …show more content…
A soliloquy is a discourse by a person who is talking to himself; a soliloquy is an effective tool for characterization because we can see what the characters are thinking at the moment and what they think of themselves. Unlike dialogue, in a soliloquy the characters are speaking their true thoughts. In the play “Othello” by Shakespeare we see Othello’s soliloquy “ but I have I have to cry, to be cruel too. I’m acting like God in the Old Testament—I have to punish the one I love.” This Othello soliloquy to himself connects to Macbeth’s because both characters are showing the weak and the wicked part of themselves. And both characters also encounter internal conflict, they both end up hurting their love ones. In Macbeth, Shakespeare uses the imagery and symbolism of sleep in Macbeth’s soliloquies to show how he transforms from weak and conflicted to wicked and …show more content…
Macbeth’s state of mind in this soliloquy shows that he is scared of Banquo now that he is king. Shakespeare uses Banquo’s soliloquy in this scene to show us that Macbeth’s fear is real, even though he is king, he is not secure. “Thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis, all, as the weird women promised, and I fear Thou plaid’s most foully for ’t”. This soliloquy shows that Banquo might be suspecting that Macbeth is responsible for the king’s murder. Even though Macbeth and Banquo cannot hear each other’s thoughts, the audience learns from both characters’ soliloquies that they are both suspecting something of the other, and neither of them is wrong. Because of his fear for Banquo, his conflicted state of mind, Macbeth decided to kill him because he 's not safe in his crown. Even does his wife tells him not to kill Banquo because he is safe as king his wife opinion does not matter to him anymore. These soliloquies show the importance of this kind of writing in Macbeth because it help us know about the characters and their point of view toward themselves and other characters in the play and how they transform throughout the play. This supports my thesis because through Macbeth several soliloquies we learn how he change from wick

In his play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses plot to showcase the cause and effect relationship between ambition and action. This plays a major part in the main theme of the play, which questions unchecked power and ambition. Macbeth’s power/position goes unchecked for a long period of time in the play; this is not to say that there were not those who wondered whether Macbeth was actually fit to be in charge. This merely shows how rather than taking action sooner, most of the characters who were wary of Macbeth chose first to try and wait things out, all the while Macbeth continued on his quest for more power. A debatable topic that stems from the theme of unchecked power and ambition, is whether or not Macbeth’s ambition to become King was pre-existing…
