And why is that? It is because of the normalization of companionship, especially in public places such as movie theaters. While observing the people in the lobby of the movie theater, I noticed that the place was full of groups of people. In different areas of the theater, it was the same, with the bare minimum being two people per group. One such group was made up exclusively of teenage boys, six of them, and they went everywhere together. When one offered to purchase snacks, the entire group followed, although they were beside the line, not in it. They all stuck together and were interacting quite well with one another and having little to no difficulty talking to every person in the group. It was very inclusive, and seemed to make all of the boys feel welcomed. Many of the larger groups were similar to this one, and were scattered all over the place. It is a known fact that minimum wage jobs do not hold the most lively of atmospheres. However, due to the human interactions and the positive air that is a side effect of said interaction, employees are able experience a more pleasant work environment. During the times were the customers were more sparse, I witnessed two separate occasions, with different co-workers each time, of playfulness and laughter. The first time happened between two co-workers who were sweeping the floor, they were play fighting each other and were laughing the whole time. After finishing their duty, they came closer together and talked as they walked away to another section of the theater. The other time came from another pair of co-workers who were working the snack bar. While the lobby was full of chattering people, the snack bar was empty of lines and this was a time of relaxation for the workers. The mood was light and there was singing voices in front of me. Two of the snack bar workers were singing a song together and had gigantic grins slapped on their faces, with the other workers nodding and smiling along. When it comes how employees feel in their workplace, especially if they are working with people, one can look at those very people being helped as to what atmosphere is created.
