When most people think of rape, they think of two strangers, not two people that are married or in a relationship. This is indeed rape since the sexual acts were not consensual. Since that stigma of rape being two strangers exists, when the rape in a marriage or relationship happens, most of the time the offender does not get charged. When someone is not charged, that raises many problems. One problem would be that the victim most likely will continue to be raped repeatedly. The victim will be unprotected against their offender especially if there are alcohol and other drugs involved. The cause of the problem is the offender not stopping the sexual contact when the victim refuses to have sex with them. Furthermore, another level of the problem is when society and the justice system does not treat the rape the same as other rape incidents. As a solution to the problem, the social work profession can offer various versions of support to the victims. A social worker would be able to provide a list of counselors to the victims that would help them to vocally express and overcome their abuse. Informing the victim of support groups such as Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) and Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) would also be helpful. I was a customer service worker, fabric cutter, and a cashier. That experienced helped me to furthermore increase my people and communication skills. It also introduced me to an abundance of elderly citizens. From that experience, the interactions that I had with various people from all over the world solidified my decision to become a social worker. Since my sophomore year of college, I have been employed as a ceramics assistant at the HPA on campus. Here I make clay, clean, and break down / set up for events. These experiences taught me that no matter where someone comes from, there is something new that you can always learn. That is vital in social work because things around us are always changing and evolving. For an example, when I become a social worker, I will continue to participate in new opportunities of training to learn more and increase my skills. I brought many strengths to these experiences, such as people skills, communication skills, punctuality, teamwork, and being able to follow guidelines and duties. My only challenge was trying to keep conversations at a minimum with customers. They often easily opened up to me which made them want to talk to me in depth.
