The Importance Of Social Work With Immigrants

Decent Essays
Although each branch of practice has sets of skills that pertain to it, an important part of social work practice is to be able to adapt skills to competently work with clients of special populations. One of those special populations is immigrants. When it comes to working with immigrants it is important to be aware of how to adapt practice skills to work with clients because of factors such as possible language barriers and different cultural norms. In micro practice with immigrants it is important to be aware of the differences they may have from any other client. One of the first things that is important in working with individuals in this situation is to be made aware if they are not fully competent to speak in a language that you understand.

The documentary depicts the importance of the role of policy in social work because while many people view policy as something distant with very little effect on everyday life, the film captured the pervasive way in which immigration legislature can affect someone’s life.…

As I have learned throughout my time as a social work student at Carleton University, I have become familiar with the generalist perspective of social work practice. My understanding of the general perspective stipulates, that it is better for a social worker to have a strong understanding of multiple theories and ways of practice, rather than being proficient in solely one theory or practice. This is directly related to the changes that have occurred at my placement, I have luckily been able to learn from two supervisors. Therefore, I was able to develop 2 distinct practices, which were influenced by my first supervisor Hadiya, and my second supervisor Caitlin. Both of the practices that I have learned were developed by watching how both of my supervisors respond to different experiences, as well as their interaction patterns with the residents of Harmony House.…

It is the social worker’s responsibility to be aware of their own biases when assessing and problem solving with clients. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics (1996) advises that social workers must be mindful of cultural and ethnic differences when working with their clients. The less the social worker understands about the client’s background in respect to their culture and environment, the more challenging it will be to understand and assess the client’s rationality. In addition, NASW (1996) suggests that valuing the importance of human relationships compels social worker to engage with their clients. For instance, if a social worker and a client have a positive relationship, they will be able to work together and have effective…
