When entering Illinois State University I knew I wanted to belong somewhere in the community. When I made friends I was picking and choosing groups that best suited me. I have a shy personality and it was hard to reach out and meet new people for me. When I met individuals that came from the same background, had similar hobbies, values or even that came from the same city we instantly grew interest on making a friendship. The girls that I made friendships with were friends with girls who were part of a sorority. They exposed me to the members and brought me around to get to know them. I soon found myself belonging to a group that made being at Illinois State better, and made me feel part of a family. That was really special to me and influenced my decision to stay involved with the members as they exposed to me the opportunities the sorority had and how I can find a family nationwide and not just on campus with the sorority.
Many micro and macro level of social circumstances paved the way for me to join a sorority. Without the macro level opportunities to attend college, receive an education and a movement that was catered for women of color, I would not have been influenced to join a sorority. The influences in my micro level further encouraged my decision to join a sorority. My family who raised me to ensure I graduate, peers that I surrounded myself with and the urge to fight the stereotypes for women of color were things thrown at me since high school and further encouraged my path to find the sorority I am in
