The Importance Of Social Structure And Social Interaction

Decent Essays
My favorite chapter so far has been Social Structure and Social Interaction, which is chapter 4. Looking into interactions, relationships, and features within groups and societies was very interesting. It caused me to look inward at myself and at my own ways of thinking, behaviors, and relationships. Everyone’s unique blend of culture, class, statuses, roles, groups, social institutions, etc. guide their behavior and interactions. It’s interesting thinking about how our interactions with others are carried out and received, and some of the background factors that make it go as such.
Chapter 4 focuses on macrosociology and microsociology. The concentrations of these are different, but go hand in hand. The focus of macrosociology is on the broad

Henslin (2015) notes that within macrosociology, the major components of social structure are “culture, social class, social status, roles, groups, and social institutions” (p. 100). The relationships of such groups to one another affects who we are and what we are like, even what we do in one another’s presence. This face-to-face type of interaction is the focus in microsociology. Countless aspects of interaction are impacted by society and group relationships, such as stereotypes, personal space, eye contact, smiling, and body language (Henslin 2015). It is very interesting how each little action, movement, and decision in social interaction is guided and received differently depending on each of the involved people’s social structures. Some things that just seem like human nature to me, are not, and are just solely custom to our society. Even small interactions and things such as smiling can be taken different ways between cultures, and this is due to the varying social structures. It’s cool to know that no one will view the world in the exact same way as you, as we all have unique combinations of social structures. It’s …show more content…
I, just like everyone else, lead a busy life. My days are filled, and I typically don 't have time for homework until my daughter is in bed at night. I often start each week completing the readings and homework from another class, then I move on to the reading for this course, and take the quiz. The discussion boards are always the last things left on my weekly to do list, and I often find it to be Sunday night and still not have the discussions complete. I truly do like the idea of relating the information back to our own lives, seeing other’s perspectives, and being able to communicate with each other. But, writing has never been my easiest or favorite or activity, so it’s the obvious thing for me to want to push to the back each week, as other things seem more important or like I’ll have a more productive time completing them. My goal for the rest of the semester is to keep up with the rest of the discussion boards, and no longer wait for Sunday nights to complete them, as it is stressful and then makes me feel rushed and anxious. I enjoy this course and feel that I grasp much of the information; I just need to be more on top of completing my discussion boards, so that my grade will better reflect my care and knowledge of the

For the monograph I have chosen, the Trouble between us . To me this book was interesting and somewhat confusing at the same time. While I was reading I had to read a certain paragraph once or twice to actually get it. I can honestly say I am glad I do not have to read this book any longer. The main point of this book was to show us why the woman movement did not move within racial ethnicity.…

From cover to cover, the book “Outliers” is filled with great quotes and important life lessons. Some specific quotes and lessons from the book, “Outliers” will carry on with me as I enter into my college years and later, into adulthood. I know that I will keep these quotes tucked in the back of my head as I face challenging decisions and whatever other unexpected hardships life may decide to throw my way. The chapter that stuck out to me the most from the book, “Outliers” was chapter one. Chapter one pertained the most to me because it talks about a young hockey player that gets scouted and becomes successful at his sport.…

One topic that I found interesting to me was military suicide and the reasons the book thought military personal was committing suicide. This really gained my attention, because being a military child myself, I have experienced different reasons as to why a military veteran or active duty service member would commit suicide. Many of those reasons are from P.T.S.D (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), which comes from being in a very traumatic situation. The majority of these suicides from my personal experience is, because the service members are not able to handle or talk about the problems they have experienced and many will not share everything. These issues do not end for most of them when they go to sleep, most of the time they have nightmares.…

An example would be the Power Spots. Learning how each of the different spots has a different meaning (in terms of where the chairperson, facilitator, leader, and outsider are supposed to sit) really affected me because now when I am meeting with my peers, advisor or even a future boss, I am going to be well aware of the importance of sitting in certain spots, as well as not disrespecting others by sitting in what could be considered a wrong spot. The second chapter that surprised me while reading it was Two Kisses or One? Travel Etiquette in a Global World. I really enjoyed reading what this chapter included, but what I read in terms of how to behave abroad really surprised me.…

Necessary to understand society is the comprehensive understanding of social structure (macrosociology) and social interaction (microsociology) (Henslin, Gelnday, Duffy, & Pupo 2007, p. ). Central to this essay is the shaping of identity, and the influence that both social structure and social interaction retain throughout the formation of individual identity. This essay will highlight the complex, and often subtle combination of social structure and social interaction as shapers of individual identity in balanced environments as well as the potential for social structure to act as the sole influence in identity development in autocratic environments. Identity develops continuously throughout the lifetime and is sociologically explained as…

The strong human connections that individuals are able to create within life are ultimately inexplicable and have become necessary to be able to truly survive. Human interaction and communication are the basis of these connections and are constantly overlooked within society. The intricate patterns and details that determine the behavior of an individual and how they interact can be identified by looking at the symbols that influence their lives, such as words or gestures. Symbolic Interactionism, a micro sociological perspective that was heavily influenced by Erving Goffman, Charles Horton Cooley, and George Herbert Mead, is a concept that analyzes society through the personal meanings that people place upon actions, objects, and daily occasions (Appelrouth & Edles 2008).…

Emotion has been a developing field in psychology for years now and recently expanded beyond understanding just human emotion. Years ago, animals were only studied to see how they modeled human emotion, but now these animals are not just lab rats but viewed as unique creatures with their own behaviors and feelings that compare to a humans, but are not the same. In fact the field of animal emotion is growing more and more as animal behavior becomes a popular profession and easier to research. This raises the question, how similar to human emotion is animal emotion? Are they alike at all and how much emotion do animals express?…

No matter what the interaction is or how often they occur, everyone builds a relationship with the people they encounter. When it comes to police officers and those who work in law enforcement this is especially true due to the fact that their entire jobs revolve around being involved with the public since it is their jobs to protect the citizens in their community. A statement that speaks to the extent of how far up and down the ranks of law enforcement their relationship with those that they serve goes is one that states “police/community relations is the job of every officer and not just the person conferred with that title”. This statement means that whether a person carriers the title of officer, is the sheriff or chief of police, a detective,…
