Social networking sites turn out to be a major part of the lives of adolescents. Its influence is rapidly taking over the internet. For instance, I remember my 12 year old niece introducing me to Facebook a couple of years ago. She quickly regretted friending her family because we were able to view anything she posted. If we felt there was something inappropriate we immediate called her and talked to her about it. So, she decided to create a different account that that we were unaware existed. When we found out we questioned her and she stated that she wanted to create post without us questioning her. Then she closed her Facebook and moved to Instagram.

One of the most important functions of peer relationships is to provide a source of information about the world (Santrock, 2014. P.302). Also it is important for parental management of peer relationships. Especially on the social media networks sites. NBC show “To Catch a Predator” clearly illustrates the alleged pedophiles and their many walks of life. If parents are not monitoring who their adolescents are engaging with then this can definitely be a problem. For instance, another impact social media has had on teens is teens being more comfortable online doing things that they should be more sensitive to doing. For instance, many teens are not comfortable enough to engage in physical sexual activity in person, but are more comfortable to participate in sexual activity online. According to Krämer & Winter (2008) study it revealed that introverted and shy adolescents have a preference for online communication (p.113).
There has been some negative and positive effects on adolescents because of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social media has and is changing the way adolescent develop. It is effecting who they are, what they do, and how interact with one

(Merriam-Webster, 2011). One of the major problems of networking sites are that they can make people compare themselves to the people they see online. They might start to think less of their own lives. Users get to choose what part of themselves to display to the world on social media, and they may choose to show the fun and exciting part of their lives. This can cause people to become withdrawn and lonely. Teenagers also might become friends with individuals they don’t know very well or at all, and this presents the risk of teens being influenced by the wrong people. Even kids who are younger than teens are very much in danger from being affected by social media. Some potential problems posed by social media include “...cyber-bullying, sexting, and exposure to inappropriate content” (O’Keeffe, Clarke-Pearson). There is no limit to the things kids can see online. And there is no limit to what they can post. Social media shares a lot of sometimes private information, and that information can fall into the wrong hands. Most of all, social media provides an alternative to having face-to-face conversations.
