Social Media's Role In Politics

The 2016 presidential election marks only the third presidential election in which social media has played a role. However, social media has already become a large factor in the success of political campaigns. Alongside the use of social media by candidates, social media users have become increasingly involved in shaping campaign coverage through the proliferation of internet memes. The term “meme” was coined by an author named Richard Dawkins in 1976, who defined it as a “unit of cultural transmission that persists by leaping from brain to brain” (Hess). Memes have been used in the 2016 presidential election to add humorous entertainment and spread messages about the candidates, while enabling social media users to get more involved in political …show more content…
The conversations during and after the debate focused more on inconsequential topics like why Ken Bone should be the next president, rather than what either candidate said. While humorous and entertaining, these memes detracted from the seriousness of the debate and the issues discussed. In years past, these debates have been crucial events for voters to get to know the candidates and learn about their policy initiatives. However, in 2016, tuning into debates have become less about formulating decisions and more about being able to understand the online jokes that follow. The Ken Bone memes dominated the conversation so much, that alongside typical coverage of political debates, major news organizations such as CNN and The Washington Post wrote articles on the memes and his rise to …show more content…
Benjamin A. Lyons, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, stated that “in many ways Donald Trump is a walking meme. That’s why it has become the underlying language of this election” (Miranda). While memes have been used in past elections, they have played a much larger role in this presidential race. Between his often controversial and outrageous comments, his hair, facial expressions, and tweets, Trump provided plenty of ammunition for meme creators. Trump has been the subject of a wide range of memes, from those who poke fun at his appearance by photoshopping his lips onto his eyes, to those that attack his credibility such as the one

Many politicians use propaganda during election season and unlike propaganda in history, propaganda today rely heavily on the internet, social media, and news outlets. During the 2016 United States presidential election Donald Trump used social media a lot to share his ideas to the public and even discredit opposing presidential candidates. He also had different forms of propaganda like the slogan “Make America Great Again”, and like other candidates they went to different cities in the U.S. and spoke publicly about their vision of what they want to accomplish during their presidential term when they get elected. But the highlight of this presidential election was how Donald Trump used social media to convince the citizens that he is the right candidate and that his ideas will make America a better country. Another example of propaganda is the “Black Lives Matter” motto, it inspired many people in the United States to start peaceful protest like taking a knee during the national anthem in an attempt to end racism in the world.…

The mythical Donald Trump is a knotty character, he trades on several mythologies involving success, power, a man of “action”, authenticity (tells it as it is as “he’s one of us”) and the American greatness and destiny. Analysis on media texts is necessary for the audience to gain a better understanding of the power media texts produce meanings. We need textual analysis to identify how different elements of media texts form together to produce meaning and also how ‘common sense’ meanings are socially constructed. In the Donald Trump video, one form of analysing the media text is how media platforms present Donald Trump in a certain manner.…

A politician is a person who is currently in hold of a position or is seeking an office within a government. They gain power by election being either voted for by people or by a definitive group in the government. And a politician’s purpose is to support and create laws or policies that would govern the land and its people. In Thomas L. Friedman’s op-ed article, he stated that "politicians see evil, hear evil, and speak evil" in order to present to the citizens that politicians have taken their power for granted and to indirectly speak to the politicians to polish their actions. Although politicians hold public speeches to appeal to the people of the country, I would agree that Thomas L. Friedman’s views on politicians’ actions are evil.…

Samuel Loewner talks about how researchers for social media have said that it was time for social media to be used by the government (26). The government did just this, but it had negative effects. The artist uses caricatures that exaggerate some features of the candidates and the media to make it more comical, but not too much which would distract viewers from the subtle message in the cartoon. The cartoon explicitly refers to the media and Donald Trump by using pictures of them. The cartoon also implicitly refers to the Republican candidate by using an elephant in a suit. The author uses this illustration to display to the people that the ideals and ideas of Donald Trump don't represent the republican party as a whole.…

The 2016 Presidential Election Campaign in the United States was notably distinct, with a woman, a democratic socialist, and a billionaire businessman making waves within their parties. With that, social media played an important role in the transmission of information and candidates’ core messages. Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump used social media to their advantage, though very differently. This essay argues that the importance of social media in order to transmit political messages is becoming increasingly important, and that Bernie Sanders was able to more effectively utilize social media and to communicate his campaign’s messages through social media than Donald Trump during the primary campaign.…
