Social Class In America Analysis

Social class is an important factor in society and the economy. Almost every culture uses social class to define one’s place in society. Social class lasts forever since it displays the amount of power and wealth people have. Social class can be defined as a category in society that places people in divisions, in which they have about the same amount of power or wealth. Yet, the way social class is perceived varies in different cultures. In most cultures, social class is based on wealth and people can go up and down the divisions depending on how much money they have. America uses the class system, which determines the social status of an individual. But in some other countries like India, use the caste system to determine the social status of an individual but do not offer social mobility and people will remain in the same division. Even though people that have different ethnicities will not be treated the same they all take part in the class system. The class system in America measures the social status of an individual through the amount of power and wealth they have. Individual are categories in low, middle or high class. People can go up and down the categories in the class system in America since it had inequalities between the classes. Chudacoff, states “that social mobility can occur only in a society where distributions of status and resources are unequal and where therefore there are chances for people to gain or lose”(104).
