As a child, I grew up playing soccer. On my father’s side of the family my uncles as well as my father were fanatics of the sport. Both my father and my uncles raised my siblings, cousins, and myself to play and love the sport. Soccer was an intense sport in my family; we would get together and have scrimmages usually once or twice a week against ourselves or other teams. I also had soccer practice on weekday evenings and games Saturday mornings. Soccer helped me get fit as a child, before I began playing soccer my family nickname was “Gorda,” which is Spanish for fat. The name was made and given to me by my uncles whom called me their “Gordita,” or “Fatty” in spanish. The name was not out of disrespect towards my weight, it was just a name that stuck and that I listened to as a child. Even to this day, most of my family refers to me as “gorda.”
However, soccer was not the only sport I attempted. I also tried T-ball as a child and basketball and cross-country in middle school. My mother’s side of the family was more involved into baseball and I wanted to try it so I convinced my parents into enrolling

I quit playing sports my seventh grade year mainly because my sister stopped playing sports and everything she did I wanted to do as well. My sister was a role model to me, but she would tell me to continue playing, that I did not have to quit just because she did. My response was always “I did not quit because of you,” or “I just do not want to play anymore.” Looking back to when I participated in sports, I realize how good I actually was. Even though I was not the best player in the teams I played for I know I played good and I would have loved to continue playing soccer or running cross country. To this day, I love when people invite me to scrimmages or to work out because I miss the feeling of playing and

I was never a sporty kid. For the majority of my childhood, my hobbies have included reading, playing video games, and other generic nerd activities. If you had asked me if I wanted to play a sport, I would have laughed at the prospect, so I surprised even myself when I answered yes to my mother’s inquiry about joining my school’s new flag football team.…

I wanted to continue playing a sport and being active and I would not let being cut from a team stop me. 10 minutes late I passed the track team whose coach was my biology teacher. It dawned on me that the opportunity to not give up was right in front of me even if i had to compromise on my friends. I walked over to the Coach and asked if it was too late to join and she eagerly responded, “of course not!”. From 10 minutes after i got cut to…

Soccer was something I invested 11 years of my life into, and quitting abruptly put my parents into a frenzy. To my parents this was just another stupid decision, but to me it was the start of my independence. From this day on I began to make choices because I personally wanted to. I stopped caring what my parents thought of me and promised myself to do more for myself. I began excelling in school, not because of the pressure my parents put on me to succeed, but because I knew I could do better if I applied myself. Being presented with the realization that I am in control of my own life is what truly allowed me to change how I carried myself. Yes, I still love my parents and have not become traitorous towards them, but I believe that becoming independent before entering college is beneficial. In Jr. High, I excelled in sports playing basketball in the fall, volleyball in the winter, and track and field during the spring. Soccer has been one of the most influential activities I have participated in throughout my life. As a child, my father would take me to the neighborhood park to play soccer together. At the age of eight, he convinced me to try out for a small team, the Silver Bullets. Although it was only the two versus two division, it opened my eyes to the world of soccer and made me want to continue on this path for as long as possible. Throughout junior high and high school, I played for my current school, American Heritage, as a forward and midfielder. Through the many years that I played soccer, I have learned many qualities that have helped form who I am today. With every loss, I learned how to handle failure. The first time I tried to play soccer at my secondary school in Niger, one student called me “Gaida”, which means stranger. A classmate I knew for one month called me Gaida. He then said, in French “tu es gros, tu ne peux pas courir? As a child, I was fat, and at the age of 12 I had 80 kilograms. This sentence broke me and pushes me to be reserved in a certain way. Exercising on fitness was a practice I was ashamed to do because anytime I exercise people will throw comments like, “Le gros Bedel veut maigrir” the fat boy is trying to lose weight. This bizarre insult made me lose confidence and avoid approaching people when they were playing soccer. But still, I remembered the voice of my father about the game.…

Little did I know, those exercises were preparing me for my future by teaching me lifelong lessons I will never forget. Water polo taught me discipline. If I lost the ball, I would sprint as hard as I could to get on defense and win the ball back. There was no way I was going to let my team down if I did not try my hardest to fix my mistake. I learned hard work at soccer practice when I spent hours upon hours working on the same drills or practicing a certain play. I pushed myself to the limit every practice to ensure that I would perform in games. That hardwork and dedication paid off when my team started working our way to the top in our league. Through hard work I learned that practice makes perfect and you must always set yourself up for success. If you consistently push yourself during fitness, you will notice how fit you feel during the game when everyone else in buckled over breathing hard. Lacrosse taught me leadership when I was forced to step up and push my team to work hard. I encouraged, directed and befriended everyone the best I could. It is rewarding to see the player you helped teach the fundamentals to, score the game winning goal in the championships. Sports have had an irreplaceable impact on my character. Coaches, teammates and supportive parents have all taught me these lessons. But my family is by far the most supportive group of people in my…
