Skateboarding born in the 50s in California on the seaside coast such as Los Angeles or Hawaii. By their long walks tarred along beaches, the cities become the cradle of skateboarding. Indeed, many phenomena such as the expansion of these towns based on an orthogonal pattern (grid, streamlined mesh of the urban fabric, large squares in front of public buildings) have greatly encouraged this urban sport. We can precise that Los Angeles, postmodern city, has not city center which would deploy a set of shops and amenities. Therefore, people are forced to using car. Adding to this constraint, public transports does not respond to a daily mode. Therefore, long tarred roads create a perfect playground for skaters. This finding is enriched by Raphaël Zarka which in its book “Freeride” emphazed the typology of Los Angeles which is specific to the …show more content…
It must nuance because in fact skateboarding actually raises the issue of redefining the public space but do not answer. Indeed, they do not broaden the possibilities of the space to other practices. However, in their pursuit of pleasure, they provide a reflection on the appropriation of public space.
Therefore, the examples previously developed have shown how the observation of skateboarding could open a new way of conceiving public space. More or less well received by other pedestrians, these projects still tend to multiply as the sport is rooted in the cities.

Carr (2017), the author of “Skateboarding in Dude Space: The Roles of Space and Sport in Constructing Gender among Adult Skateboarders” conducted interviews with several women at skate parks to try and understand why there are predominately only cisgender, white, males who skate. His interviews uncovered that the reason that women were not skating was due to the fact that there is no safe space for women to practice their skating skills. When asked, the women claimed that just walking into a male dominated skate park was intimidating enough without anyone even saying anything to them. Nelson mentioned the attitudes of fans carrying on the sexiest ideals that only a man could do one sport well, but Carr noted a female skater who had a small following of about four to six girls who were there to cheer her on. It is because of stories like Carr’s and Nelson speaking out that the world of sports is slowly becoming less gender…

    1. Changes in society occur constantly as generations and norms evolve. As old norms and ideas advance, we have to ask ourselves if they have really progressed? In the article by David Amsden we see that since slavery has been abolished it has not been recognized (2015:p.1). We see in the article by Kate Bolick that the idea of marriage might not be the same anymore but a stigma around women being single remains (2011:p.1).…

As I took my first step onto my local skatepark, the only thing that crossed my mind was “no way anybody skates that.” I was referring to the fourteen stair that was right in front of the entrance. While acting as a skater, I realized that I am not too far from a skater myself; though there is a significant difference between a skater and me. As noted by my friend earlier, " I see no difference..." I concluded the only difference between a skater and me is that I do not know how to skateboard: This, I view, is one of the most important things that a skater should know how to do. Although being a skater is fun, I enjoy being who I am. This project has helped me understand that, frequently, I judge someone based on their appearance, how they act, and what they're wearing at the time, and that I need to change the way I get to know…

As a driver who drives frequently in the city on a daily basis, it has occurred to me recently that more and more skateboarders are enjoying the sport on busy downhill roads and within the busy districts of San Francisco without wearing sufficient protective gear. Even while going down hills at surprisingly fast speeds next to cars and pedestrians, many skateboarders, mostly adolescents, choose not to wear any protective gear. According to McKenzie, the most common injuries treated in emergency departments associated with skateboarding were fractures and dislocations, lower extremities for older individuals, and face; head; or neck injuries for younger individuals. These injuries can be reduced or even prevented by changing a skateboarder’s behavior – in this case wearing protective gear and being aware of one’s…

One of the strangest activities and subcultures observed is based around the use of a self-propelled plank of wood on wheels. Both children and adults participate in the use of these planks they call "skateboards" as a mean of transportation and fun. Beyond the common use of this technology for transportation there are many who use the planks to perform various technical maneuvers. It is typical to see someone of a young age seemingly aimlessly flipping their plank into the air and trying to land on it.…

The beggar on the New York subway has a body truncated at the waist and he rolls on a cart, chanting "I have no legs!" in a singsong as he passes. Just for a slight moment, he attracts the attention of Telly (Leo Fitzpatrick) and Casper (Justin Pierce), who look young and healthy but are actually much more damaged than this legless man. As Larry Clark's "Kids" harrowingly exhibits, these two are part of an emotionally dead teen-age culture built on aimlessness, casual cruelty and empty pleasure.…
