In 2000 to 2009, children in poverty went from 26.3 percent to 27.6. The adult unemployment rate went up as well. It started at 4.2 percent and went up to 9.2. The percent of children receiving food stamps went from to 45.2 percent to 51.2. As the percentage rates keep raising, as a community we should try to help as much as we can locally to support our students.

Sellers; the councilor at Junction Hill, she said you see both situational and generational poverty. There is always more situational poverty in the school but it changes more over the years. Situational poverty is a period of being poor caused by situational factors. Generational poverty is a form of poverty that can encompass multiple generations of a family.
Students face many challenges when they are living in poverty. One of the major challenge’s for a student is having a support system. Having a good support system would help students to always have a good dinner, finish homework at night, go to bed on time, and be ready for the next day. Although some students have a good life style others don’t know where they will be staying from night to night.
Addressing these challenges in the classroom can be difficult. Students facing poverty situations can be tired, hungry, and/or dirty. At Junction Hill last year, they purchased a washer and dryer and is kept at the school. They debated on the washer and dryer to see if it would actually be put to use for the right purpose. It has been a great investment because they are able to wash the student’s dirty clothes at the school. Some students that are living in poverty don’t have any food at their house. The only food they eat is lunch at school and breakfast the following day. An idea to consider is to send home sack lunches to the students in poverty over the weekend. As a teacher it is always hard to start a conversation with a parent to ask them if there is anything that the school can help
