Sellers; the councilor at Junction Hill, she said you see both situational and generational poverty. There is always more situational poverty in the school but it changes more over the years. Situational poverty is a period of being poor caused by situational factors. Generational poverty is a form of poverty that can encompass multiple generations of a family.
Students face many challenges when they are living in poverty. One of the major challenge’s for a student is having a support system. Having a good support system would help students to always have a good dinner, finish homework at night, go to bed on time, and be ready for the next day. Although some students have a good life style others don’t know where they will be staying from night to night.
Addressing these challenges in the classroom can be difficult. Students facing poverty situations can be tired, hungry, and/or dirty. At Junction Hill last year, they purchased a washer and dryer and is kept at the school. They debated on the washer and dryer to see if it would actually be put to use for the right purpose. It has been a great investment because they are able to wash the student’s dirty clothes at the school. Some students that are living in poverty don’t have any food at their house. The only food they eat is lunch at school and breakfast the following day. An idea to consider is to send home sack lunches to the students in poverty over the weekend. Living in poverty in America does not always equal hunger and homelessness. Some Americans believes that the word “poverty” means impoverishment: an incapability to provide a family with nourishing food, clothing, and suitable shelter. Families living in poverty surely fight to make ends meet; often they struggle to pay for nutritious meals to put on the table of air conditioning in the home. Barbara Ehrenreich states in an article that “the outlook is not as cozy when we look at the effects of the recession on a group generally omitted from all the vivid narratives of downward mobility…” (337-341).…

Although classified by multiple set of measures, most recent literature has universally recognized different theories of poverty (Dalton et al., 2011; Anand and Lea, 2011; Sun & Sun, 2012; Pridemore, 2011; Alkire & Foster, 2011; Lustig, 2011; Walby et al., 2012; Ravallion, 2011; Azariadis, 2011; Spears, 2011; McBride Murry et al., 2011; Collins, 2011; Walker & Day, 2012). Astutely, most of social theory researchers have been able to differentiate between theories that root the cause of poverty in individual deficiencies as seen by the conservative and theories that lay the cause on broader social phenomena as seen by the liberals or progressives. On one hand, a quasi-collective set of beliefs perceived poverty in the American society under…

For most, the word poverty suggests an inability to provide food, water, clothing and shelter. According to the 2012 U.S. Census, poverty rates have many variables between ethnic groups. In 2012, 27.8% blacks and 22.3% of Hispanics were impoverished, compared to 8.4% of non-Hispanic whites and 12.1% of Asians. Minority families headed by single-women particularly experience a higher rate of poverty than of families headed by single-men, or married couples, so it makes sense why children are the age group most significantly affected by poverty. Regardless of location, these communities that are victim to poverty by pathology are very low-quality neighborhoods, with bad schools, and little to no job availability.…
