The quote “poverty is hard work” comes from an article written by Mark Peel. In his article he discusses the struggles that are involved when living in poverty, such as the judgement, going without and the lack of help towards Australians in poverty. Mark Peel goes into great detail in expressing his argument (Peel, 2012). However, as the topic of poverty is such a large concept, this essay has been limited to single mothers in poverty. Furthermore, to demonstrate that poverty is hard work for single mothers it is necessary to explore the sociological concepts, the issues single mothers face and the different arguments surrounding single mothers in poverty. This is due to their financial situation and lack of time. Low-income woman are 10% more likely to be disconnected from social interaction than high-income woman, which is not a result of unwillingness of the individuals. These woman are in the group of the most socially excluded from society, not just because of their financial issues but they also are burdened with the responsibility of being a care giver. This responsibility gains the remainder of the individual’s time. Single mothers have 10-18% higher rate of being exclude in general, 8-13% feeling disrespected and 23% higher chance of going without holidays (Patulny & Wong, 2013). The negative impact from not being respected creates a low self-image, alongside the previous factors in their environment. With mainly employment based strategies to support these individuals, it is necessary to explore deeper into their mental health and social needs of the women in poverty (Patulny & Wong, 2013). These mothers face all types of problems, not all involving income. Single mothers are judged and excluded from society, due to the community dissociating from the problem. The lack educational opportunities to improve their situation, with inadequate help from the government. The disadvantage these women go through influencing their daily struggles, especially in the workforce.
