Students in science teacher Katherine Levensailor’s first period class made sandals with Amazon’s delivery cardboard boxes inside and outside of room 803, on Oct. 19 for children in Haiti, victims of natural disasters. Haiti is still recovering from a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake that occurred in 2011 and Hurricane Matthew that claimed the lives of more than 877 people. These disasters left many children without shoes, causing them to have injuries such as cuts, sores, and infections on their feet. The sandals made from this project were sent to Soles4Souls, an organization that “collects shoes and sends them overseas. Jean Pierre Boyer was a mulatto of mixed African and European descent, who was educated in France and who tried to stop a severe decline in the Haitian economy. He served with the mulatto leader Alexandre Sabès Pétion and the black leader Henry Christophe after they had killed the Haitian independence leader and self-proclaimed emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1806. Haiti lifeline was developed to give hope and help to what began at just an orphanage that has now expanded to an entire community. The health care structure is so corrupt that the Haitians begin begging for help upon the organizations arrival. However, with the amount of supplies and time, it was impossible to treat everybody, which caused a whirlwind of emotions that made a lasting impression. The Haitian American culture has been a long-surviving and well-adapting culture. Starting with the indigenous people that occupied the island, before Christopher Columbus’ arrival in 1492. Columbus, being a conqueror for Spain, claimed the island of Haiti for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and named it Hispaniola meaning “little Spain”. From thenceforth the indigenous people of the island were killed off during gold conquests and the ruling of the Spanish by forced labor and diseases. Although the country has had some hardships, such as natural disasters and historic conflicts with France and the U.S., it has been able to step up in the industrial ladder as a textile-producing and sugar refining country. This is promising for its economy, and should be able to help the development of the country under certain conditions, for example, Haiti being able to trade with more developed countries and export more products.
