By increasing awareness of sex trafficking among teens in suburban areas, the instances of sex trafficking can be reduced. Sex/Human Trafficking is defined by the U.S. Department of Justice “as the act of forcing a person to perform labor or a commercial sex act through force, fraud or coercion” (Faherty, 2013). This definition provided a basis of information to base research off of. Teens are considered to be people ages 13 to 18. By researching how to educate and therefore prevent teens in suburban areas from being lured into sex trafficking, there will be a significant decrease in sex trafficking not only in suburban areas but potentially across the United States and around the world, much like other national and international organizations. Bill Stanczykiewicz, the CEO and president of the Indiana Youth Institute, explains that sex trafficking is modern day slavery. In the last four years there have been 58 investigations of separate sex trafficking rings by Indiana authorities alone; although it is difficult to accurately account for all children who fall victim to sex trafficking, there are always preventative measures that can be taken early on (Vinson, 2013). With such a substantially high number of sex trafficking offenders it is an obvious issue in Indiana although many people do not realize it. Oftentimes, children are unknowingly coerced into this trade by people they know and trust, according to Phil Shay, director of development for Abolition International (Cooley). This organization is dedicated to eliminating human trafficking by means of accreditation, advocacy, education, and restoration efforts. Abolition International focuses on the global scale as well as nationally with a team of individuals in the United States, United Kingdom, Cambodia, and Norway who are determined to end human trafficking. This organization has speakers who travel to different areas to speak about human trafficking around the world. Unfortunately, this organization has not made its way to very many smaller suburban areas to spread their vast knowledge to the youth due to their large scale. Not only are people rescued from their enslaved lives, they are given restorative care, therapy, and support in order to continue their lives as individuals (Cooley). There is less than a 1 percent chance of being convicted of sex trafficking in the United States; with human labor being so cheap, a trafficker can make $1,100 per person, per week, according to Raio Krishnayya, founder and executive director of Indiana 's Center for Victim and Human Rights (Green, 2011). This organization realized that about 300,000 children in the United States are victims of sex trafficking violence. The large number of victims inspired many individuals to spring into action in order to spread awareness of the issue. Organizations like this one inspire citizens to take action and inform the nation and globe about the very intimidating, yet real, issue of sex trafficking
