Gender Roles In My Family

Letty Cottin Pogrebin quoted, “Sex roles are passed from parents to children as inexorably as blue eyes or small feet.” I relate to this quote as if my sex role was another rule that I was expected to obey by. My parents have and continue to demonstrate “traditional value” roles. Traditional values are defined in my family as, men are financial supporters and protector of the family and the women are stay at home mom’s and wives.

My father worked long hours to help provide my family financially. My mother worked at a preschool so she would be able to see us as well as teach us herself. The children were seen as more of my mother’s responsibility rather than my fathers. Our days were routine, in the mornings we would eat breakfast that my mom had cooked, then she would help us bathe, brush our teeth, dress, and pack our lunches and bags for school. Skimpily dressed women are photoshopped to appear more attractive so they product is bought more frequently. Many women are oblivious to the world of photoshop and are quick to compare themselves with other females. Males observe this frequently used advertising method as an opportunity to view unrealistic size females in a sexual pleasure.

Socioeconomic status has always been struggle for my family. Having no college degree both of my parents found it hard working jobs that paid more than minimum wage as well as having benefits for the family. Perceiving this was an issue, my mother went back to school so she could promote to a higher position that paid more at work. Seeing my mom’s efforts my dad relocated to another facility so he was able to pick up over-time. My father enrolled himself in courses that benefited his position earning him wage increases.
