Romeo and Juliet originally published in 1597 and written by William Shakespeare is possibly one of, if not the most well known love stories in all of literature. Though Shakespeare was British and the play was written in English it takes place in Verona Italy. Modern Verona is a main tourist destination in Northern Italy but in the 16th century it was much different than the city it is today. Three of Shakespeare's play have been set in Verona and in the case of Romeo and Juliet the setting greatly affects the plot of the play, with Capulet choosing who his daughter is to marry for her, the constant fighting in the streets and Romeo's banishment being all unlikely events for 21st-century Verona.

The setting of Romeo and Juliet affects the plot of the play because of Juliet's arranged marriage.After a conversation with Paris in his home Capulet changes his mind about letting Juliet choose her husband and forces her to marry Paris unknowing that her and Romeo are already wed.(Act.5/sc.4-5). Arranged marriages were commonplace throughout the world until approximately the 18th century. After Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo gets revenge by killing Tybalt and the next day he is banished from Verona (Act.3/sc.1/lines.135-140). By current Italian law according to art. 575 “whoever causes The death of another human being is punished by no less than twenty one years in prison”. The law also states circumstances in which the murderer has to be punished by life in prison. Romeo in modern Italy would likely not get his verdict as quick as he did in the play and in modern times he would have to attend court and stand before a judge or jury instead of having one person choosing his fate after such a short period of
