Also why this setting is important to Sal is because she talks about some important things in the stories she tells to Gram and Gramps, that are very secret from her friends and other people she doesn’t want to tell about this to. There are some milestones, or subplots in the story, which is what I meant in the sentence before this one. So, all I’m saying is that this is the important setting to Sal in the story that I chose because there are other ones, too. Some textual evidence to support this is that in the beginning of the story, Sal says “In the car, as we started our long journey to Lewiston, Idaho, my grandmother Hiddle said, ‘Salamanca, why don’t you entertain us?” (7-8) What this quote means is that Sal is going on a road trip with her grandparents to see possibly where her mom went and also possibly find her. Why this quote is important to the storyline is that Sal talks about important things in the story when she goes on the road trip. How Sal changes from this setting is that in this part, they are just starting the road trip and she is really hopeful about finding her mom and getting better at finding out what she is doing / what is her purpose in …show more content…
Another quote to support how the setting is important to the plot is, “This was Phoebe’s power. In her world, no one was ordinary. People were either perfect—like her father—or, more often, they were lunatics or axe murderers. She could convince me of just about anything—especially about Margaret Cadaver. From that day on, Margaret Cadaver’s hair did look spooky and her voice did sound exactly like dead leaves. Somehow it was easier to deal with Margaret if there were reasons not to like her, and I definitely did not want to like her.” (21) This quote means that Sal knows how Phoebe thinks and that these things aren’t secret because it doesn’t tell anything secret about Phoebe. How this quote relates to the storyline is that Phoebe is another important character in the story and that Sal just wants to tell her grandparents about her probably so that they know her better and it’s also important that they know about Phoebe because that detail is important to the story. How this quote shows that Sal changes is that like before she shares really no secrets about Phoebe and Phoebe and Sal are the main characters in the stories that Sal tells in the beginning, but in the middle of the book and almost the end, she tells way more secrets about her and Phoebe than she did in the beginning. Because in the beginning, she literally only shared a
