I worked as a coordinator for student professional development in an office called Center for Academic Service Learning and Research at Azusa Pacific University as a graduate assistant last year. I was in charge of assisting and mentoring eight student workers, planning for office events, and participating in end of semester evaluations. Service Learning creates opportunities for students to practice what they have learned in class and put into practice at the local communities where everyone benefits from the process; the main job of our office is to be the bridge to connect students, faculty, and the community partners. Most significant task of the student workers is to attend the service learning courses in the beginning and the end of …show more content…
The fact that the student worker who missed the orientation and the meeting simply offered an apology to the supervisor and the other student employee and moved on with her day as both showed kindness and forgiveness shows the problem of family like organization structure which in this case damages the reputation of the workplace. This incident can set a bad example to the other student employees giving them false ideas that they too can make mistakes and get over with it without much trouble if they simply …show more content…
Due to the nature of the job students are really busy in the beginning and the end of semester with not much to do during the middle. Students are often placed in the same course the following year so that they are familiar with the task. However, this often results in lack of motivation for students as it escalates when they become seniors. Bolman and Deal (2013) stated that if you have both talent and desire, you will do well. With the student workers with energy and enthusiasm, I feel like students are lacking motivation when they have talent to perform and to their job. Students are often asked during their down time to work on something productive or find something that they can do for the office. However, this often results in students using their phone during work hours. Things that motivate are intrinsic to the work itself- things like achievement, responsibility, and recognition for work well done. (Bolman & Dean, 2013). Instead of creating something creative for the office during their time, students lose interest and motivation as they are

Service Learning is an act of portraying goodness, as described in the the article "What We Don't Talk About When We Don't Talk About Service Learning". Giving back to the community, is showing an act of kindness for others whom might clearly deserve it in a time of need or just as well as to those who merely expected it. Through these good actions, whatever the cause may be, a chain reaction could be started. Maybe not everyone shows their gratitude by giving back what they received, for example lending a helping hand, but one way or another they react upon this gesture in an appreciative manner. Having such young souls participate in wonderful causes such as shelter homes, hospitals, and schools to name a few locations is a wonderful…

Through this project I was forced to make sacrifices for the benefit of the group and our work. Yet, by doing this, I was able to gain a better understanding of my peers and their wonderful talents. The most challenging part of this Service Learning Activity was working with people who were not English majors or poets. Although the Mass Communications students were amazing, they did not know much about poetry.…

The most important effect that incentives/disincentives had on my service learning was were to complete it followed by when to complete it. I made my decision to complete my service learning at NYSMM pretty quickly after getting the assignment. The incentives/disincentives were pretty clear almost immediately, With the NYSMM I had to complete a transcript which would take only as long as it took to me to complete it instead of a preset amount of time. Secondly, I didn’t have to travel anywhere. This meant I saved time and gas money from not having to travel to some location in order to complete my service learning.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…

Motivating the Unmotivated Office Staff I. Introduction This research element focuses on the need to motivate clerical staff in a school. The clerical workers play a valuable role within the school setting. It is the clerical workers that actually keep the school operating (e.g. ensuring that classrooms are covered when teachers are not at work, maintaining student’s records, meet deadlines, screen telephone calls for school administrators, listening to the complaints of angry parents, and many other daily tasks). Many of the clerical workers become unmotivated about their job when the workload is continuing to increase because the faculty pushes off the work they choose not to do; and the income is extremely low.…
