The Importance Of Service Learning In The Classroom

During this semester, I served at Del Rey Wood Elementary schools in Seaside. I worked with two teachers in two different kindergarten classrooms. Before working at this site, I had not been in the classroom in many years, so I was a little nervous to be in front of students again. My time in the classroom has been very insightful and such a great experience. I have been able to visualize the assets, needs and opportunities that the community offers to the many different stakeholders such as the teachers, students, parents and administrators. I have also discovered many ideas that helped me grasp a better understanding of my social responsibly.

For the longest time, I thought of a teacher as someone in front of the classroom writing on the blackboard, practicing letters. How cliché right? But the more time I spent in the classroom the more I see how each teacher can bring a unique approach to help their students learn. Although teaching style were much different at Del Rey Woods from what I remember at my traditional style school I attended, I really enjoyed the new ways of teaching. My service learning teachers would use short informative videos to reiterate major ideas, or use art to get the children to understand math in a fun and creative way, and would use games to help with letters and numbers. What I found most helpful was when the teachers would relate their lessons to real life situations. This allowed the children to fully understand the information because they were able to relate it back to something tangible. Finding my own teaching style is something I will need to discover in order to better serve the needs of the community and that students within
