The Importance Of Service Learning For The Covenant House

Helping others is a blessing everyone has the opportunity to do. One never knows how much a person is in need of help or how frightened they are to ask for it. We don’t know what a person has gone through. Starvation, coldness, anguish, depression, anxiety, humiliation, panic, distress, or the feeling of the defeat are some feelings they go through. Many don’t appreciate or even acknowledge how auspicious they are to have the extravagances of having a roof over their heads, or nutrition. Unfortunately, there are people who aren’t as lucky as some of us, there are people who suffer every day and struggle to survive. People who are willing to fight every day if it means that life will get better. A simple smile or just listening to them can …show more content…
I learned many lessons about how to make a difference in this world with service learning. I feel like the lesson that really stood out for me was learning how to plan and train for my exploratory project. Covenant House, being the first service learning project I’ve done, I wasn’t quite sure on what to do. Learning how to strategize on what to do for the Covenant House, assisted me a lot. There are a variety of different service learning projects one can do. There’s the Red Cross, YMCA, Animal Shelters, Nursing Homes, the Food Bank, and The Covenant House. Selecting one of these few choices is a challenge. This lesson helped me think about how I felt about each option as a project, showing me the difference in each and every one of them and how I should choose one that I feel I would contribute more. The lesson helps me organize the project in order to know exactly what we are doing so we don’t have any faults while participating in the service learning project. This lesson helped me know exactly what and what not to …show more content…
Each one has a different story of how they got to be homeless, and they’re all so brave. Having to face famine, cold, and the fear of being a young adult surviving on the streets, and do it again the next day and the day after that is really strong. The feeling of living in relentless fear of getting kidnapped, not feeling safe at any time because they are frightened that they will get into a violent situation is so much that it’s not living anymore, it’s just surviving. A wise man once said “Even if there’s a tiny tiny chance, isn’t that worth going for it.” Just because their chances of survival may not be the best doesn’t mean they will give up. Some have reasons to keep fighting to get the life they desire to have. Whether it’s getting an education, having a family, or the dream to have the luxuries of life. As I helped them, they helped me realize that there is always something that is worth keep fighting for, we just have to want to see

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room…

Holston Service Learning Project Service learning is a type of learning experience that involves community service to teach using real world scenarios. For my service-learning project I volunteered at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center. I’ve never been able to decline help to someone in need. I always put everyone else's needs before my own because when I sacrifice myself in order to put a smile on someone else’s face it gives me peace. Contributing to a cause to make the world a better place is worth the sleepless nights. When one is passionate about helping people it won’t matter to them how long they have to go without food or how tired they will feel at the end of the day. Just this week, I’ve had several occasions where I gladly gave up my time to do people favors or help someone in need.…

One essential part of humanity is helping one another. It promotes bonding, togetherness, and love. I have read times and times again in the US and other part of the world, where people stood to help other fellow citizens who have been victims of terrorist attacks, natural disasters, brutality etc. Besides the fact the recipient of a kind gesture feels a sense of gratitude and appreciation, there is a sense of fulfilment on the part of the one who renders the help. This is exactly how I feel as I relive this experience.…

This morning I was driving down the street when the traffic light turned red and I stopped at the light. While I was waiting for the light to turn green I looked to my right when I noticed a man holding up a sign saying “I’m homeless, anything will help”. I felt that I need to do something when I saw him smile at me so I gave him a couple of dollars so he can buy himself a nice meal to eat. I know I made a difference that day when I put a brighter smile on his face and I fed a hungry…

When you see someone asking for food for their family or themselves, what do you do? Most people walk away, or ignore the situation. Others take the time to talk and give the hungry something to eat, so they don 't spend the day hungry. That is one less hungry person in the world. Thankfully, there are people who build food banks to feed the hungry families, and people.…

By doing this service-learning project, the students would not only show kindness and compassion, but also build relationships with other generous people in the community. Anyone can donate books to the donation spots and students could even go pick up books from a person's home. As well as donation spots, in every building in the school students could also set up book exchanges. If a person brings a book to donate they can exchange it for a book they have never read. By donating the books to places in need, teenagers will also get a chance to personally help the less fortunate.…
