As stated earlier, Gen Z has witnessed the fall of many public figures and leaders and as a result are skeptical and lack trust for those in positions of leadership. Gen Z longs for leaders who understand them, mentor them, are approachable and genuinely care for them and want to connect with them (Powell, Mulder, & Griffin, 2016). Gen Z may respond better to leaders who are genuine and real, who do not espouse to be perfect, but who live and lead according to their values and beliefs, and take responsibility when they fail. When recruiting leaders to work with Gen Z, leaders who exhibit an authentic or servant style of leadership may resonate well with Gen Z.
• Authentic leadership focuses on leadership that is genuine and real. In a time when people feel apprehensive about what is happening around them, they long for leaders they can trust and who are honest and good people (Northouse, 2013). Authentic leaders have a clear understanding of their own values and behavior, they know who they are and where they are going and do not compromise their values when challenges arise (Northouse, 2013).
